E MFG Mm BH R APPLIGATION FILED AUG.1. 1906.
Nep w win cases TE ll STATES AENT rricn DOOR-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed August 1. 1906. Serial No. 328,784.
To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. BEIGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Door-Hinge and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby a permanent door may be hung upon a hinge and a temporary door, such as a screen or storm door, may be also hung upon the same pair of hinges and readily removed therefrom when desired, thereby saving much labor and expense in putting up and removing doors and the like which are of a temporary nature.
The invention also provides means whereby the permanent and the temporary doors may swing together-that is, when the permanent door is opened slowly; but when the permanent door is opened with a jerk thetemporary door will stay closed.
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, with which the accompanying drawings form a part of this application, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the temporary door closed. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the rolls 9 and 13 and the offset and the shoulder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the main leaves of a hinge, which are secured to the door or support, as desired, preferably by screws 3. Said leaf 1. is secured by the screws 3 within a recess a, formed in the jamb bof the door-opening, which recess is deep enough to receive the leaf 4 when the supplemental or screen door is closed, as will be clearly evident by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. The additional leaf 4 is provided, which leaf carries a pair of rolls 13 and 13, which are positioned one above and one below the rolls 8 and 9, which are positioned adjacent to one another, as shown. A pin 5 extends through the rolls 1?), 13 8, and 9 for the purpose of holding the leaves 1, 2, and 4 pivoted together to cooperate as herein specified. The roll 9, which is formed with the leaf 2, is provided with a shoulder 10, which when the door 11 is thrown open, carrying the leaf 2 therewith, will engage the offset 12 formed with the roll 13, which is in turn formed with the leaf 4, thereby causing said leaf 4 -to swing with the door 11that is, when it is opened slowly but when the door is given a sudden jerk the said shoulder and offset will pass one another, after which the door 1 1 will open alone.
The leaf 4 upon the edge opposite the edge carrying the rolls 13 and 13 has a roll 14, which is designed to cooperate with the roll 15, formed upon a fourth leaf 6, which is securely fixed to the supplemental or screen door 0, as shown. Through these rolls 14 and 15 extends a pin 5*, which pivotally connects them together. The roll 15 isprovided with an offset 16, which is engaged by the shoulder 17, formed with the roll 14, the operation of which offset and shoulder being the same as that of the rolls 9 and 13, which is above described.
WVhat I claim is In combination with a door-jamb having a recess, a door, a supplemental or screen door; of a hinge composed of four leaves, one leaf 2 being secured to the door proper by screws 3; the leaf 1 being secured to the door-j amb Within said recess; the said leaf 2 having a hollow roll integral therewith, said roll having a shoulder; the said leaf 1 having a hollow roll; the third leaf 4 having a pair of hollow rolls upon one edge thereof, one of which having an offset to engage said shoulder, a pivot-pin for the leaves 2, 4 and 1 and adapted to hold the said rolls in relation to one another; a fourth leaf secured to the supplemental door having a hollow roll, said hollow roll having an offset, the said third leaf having a hollow roll integral with the opposite edge thereof, said roll having a shoulder to be engaged by said offset carried by the fourth leaf, and a pivot-pin for the fourth and third leaves, said recess adapted to receive the third leaf when the supplemental door is closed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES F. BRICE.
