ROBERT A. WATSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE Specification of Letters Patent.`
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed March 28, 1906. Serial No. 308,476.
To all whom it mfcti/ concern/:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. WATSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in handles for tools or implements; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and ineX- pensive handle which can be easily and quickly secured `to the shank of a tool or implement.
Briefly described, my improved handle is of a skeleton form and is made of heavy wire or a similar material which is bent to form two curved grips by which the handle can be easily clasped.
The above construction, together with the details entering into my invention, will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate like parts through the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved handle as secured upon the shank of a tool. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views of the handle.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a portion of a iile 1, having a tapering flat shank 2, which adjacent each end is provided with a plurality of apertures or openings 3 and 4. The shank 2 of the iile may represent the shank of any other tool or implement which is to be provided with a handle.
My invention resides in a skeleton handle 5, said handle being formed of a single piece of heavy wire, which is bent to form two curved grips 6 6 and loop ends 7 and S, the
loop end 8 being substantially W-shaped and having a central tapering horizontal Opening 9, which is intersected by a vertically-disposed opening 10. The loop end 7 is provided with a central enlargement 11, having a slot 12 formed therein alining horizontally with the opening 9 ofthe opposite end of the handle. The central enlargement 11 is provided with a vertically-disposed opening 14, which intersects the slot 12 of the handle.
In mounting my improved handle upon the shank 2 of the file the shank is adapted to extend through the slot 12 and the opening 9 of said handle, while one of the Openings 3 alines with the opening 14 of the handle and one of the openings 4 with the opening 10 thereof. Pins 15 and 16 are then used to lock the handle upon the shank 2 of the iile 1. Rivets can be conveniently used in lieu of the pins 15 and 16.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a simple and durable handle which will. withstand the rough usage to which it is subjected. I do not care to conne myself to the size, proportion, or minor details of construction ofthe handle, and such changes as are permissible by the appended claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a tool having a flat shank provided adjacent to each of its ends with a plurality of apertures, of a handle formed from a single piece of wire bent to form two oppositely-disposed curved grips, a crossebar connecting the said curved grips at their inner ends, the said cross-bar bein enlarged in thickness and having a longitudinal opening therethrough to receive the shank of said tool, and having a transverse opening adapted to register with one of the openings at the inner end in the shank of the tool, a cross-bar connecting the outer ends of said curved grips, said latter cross-bar being bent inwardly and having a longitudinal opening central of its inwardly-bent portion to receive the shank of said tool, and having a transverse opening adapted to register with one of the openings adjacent the outer end of said shank, and pins passed through the transverse openings in said cross-bars and shank to secure the handle to said shank.
In testimony whereof I af'X my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT A. WATSON.
