To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN W. ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in bottle-closures, and more particularly in that class of such devices which com prise pivotally-supported lids or covers adapted for movement into raised and lowered position, so that whenever desired such lids or covers may be raised to" permit the contents to be poured freely from the bottle and when such lids-are lowered the bottles will be closed against the entry of insects, dust, and

other impurities; and the object of the invention is to provide a device oii this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact, strong, and durable construction having an im roved arrangement of means for raising an lowering the lid or cover into opened or closed position.

The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and

arrangement of the several parts of the improved bottle-closure whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered sim ler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapte and more convenient for use, all as will'be hereinafter fully set forth.

For convenience in moving the lid or cover 9 the same is provided witha pendent thumb-piece or tongue 10 centralbetween the spaced ears 8 8.

D By means of the slotted connection of the hd or cover 9 with the attaching member 3 it is evident that a certain extent of vertical adjustment of saidlid or cover is permitted with relation to the attachin member, so that the lid or cover is cap able 0 being moved into opened or closed position despite variations in the position of the clamping-arms 4 4 upon the bottle-neck. and of the readiness with which it accommodates dili'erent styles of bottle-neck. The pointed extension 11 also further increases the usefulness of the device for milk-bottles by affording means for conveniently removing the caps therefrom. It will also be obvious from the above description that the de vice is capable of considerable modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason 1 do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.. A closure for milk-bottles and the like comprising two members, one of which is a cover adapted to close the mouth of the=bottie and the other of which is a device adapted to be detachably secured upon the-bottle, one of said members being provided with slots and the other member being provided with pivot projections engaged for movement lengthwise of vthe slots to hold the members in hinged relation while permitting vertical adljustment of one member relatively to the ot ier.

2. A closure for milk-bottles and the like comprising an attaching member having elastic arms to embrace a bottle-neck for de tachable connection therewith, and provided with a central rearwardly and upwardly directed projecting portion the opposite sides of which have pivot projections and a lid or cover adapted to lit over the mouth of the bottle and having downwardly-directed lugs provided with vertical slotted openings wherein the pivot projections of sand firstnamed member are adjustably engaged and having a rearwardly-directed actuatingtongue extended from it between said lugs.

3. A closure for milk-bottles and the like comprising an attaching member having oppositely-arranged elastic arms to embrace a bottle-neck for detachable connection therewith and provided with a central downwardly-directed pointed tongue midway between said arms' and adapted to extend down along and bear upon the bottle-neck when said member is in place thereon and also adapted to penetrate a paper bottle-cap when the member is detached from the bottle and a lid or cover hinged on said member.
