BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,586, dated Apri] 5, 1904.
Application filed September l2, 1903. Serial No. 172,896. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURLEY CLEMENS. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Moundsville, in the county of Marshall and State of lVest Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Closure, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to a cap or closure intended particularly for bar-bottles used in retailing liquid goods. It may be applied, however, to various other purposes, as will be apparent.
It comprises, broadly speaking, a body preferably of spring metal, so as to snap over and retain its position on the mouth of the bottle, a spout projecting from the body, and a peculiarly-arranged cover for the spout.
This specification is an exact description of two examples of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi.- cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the inven tion applied to the neck of a bottle, the cover being shown in open position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing the cover closed on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section looking upward from the line 3 3 of Fig. Q, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view showing a modification in the form of the spring for opening the cover.
c indicates the body of the device, which as here shown is formed of sheet metal with slits a to give it sufficient resiliency to snap over and hold its place on the enlarged mouth of the bottle. This body may be of any other construction desired-for example, it may be formed of a network of wires suitably held in place. The body a is formed with an inwardly-extending shoulder b, and from this shoulder projects the spout c. Preferably the parts a, and c are formed of an ornamental section of metal.
CZ indicates the cover, which is hinged to the spout c at the point CZ/ and which may swing from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. l, the cover having a slight projection e at its hinged end to limit the opening movement.
f indicates a spring for throwing open the cover. This springis preferably of the doublecoil type; but it may bevaried at will. For example, a leaf or flat spring g, as shown in Fig. 4., may be employed. The cover is provided with a suitable catch for holding it in closed position. As here shown this catch comprises a tongue t, fastened to or formed on the cover CZ, and a spring-keeper t', fastened in the spout c and fitted with a finger-piece k, which projects through the walls of the spout to the outside thereof, as shown. any other desired construction may be employed, however, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The operation and advantages of the device will, it is thought, be apparent. After drawing the cork from the bottle the device should be applied as described, and it will then constitute a neat and effective closure for the bottle, which may be removed or reapplied at any time desired. By merely pressing the thumb-piece the cover (Z swings into open position, and after the bottle has been used it is only necessary to move down the cover, whereupon the catch will automatically fasten the cover in place.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variationsas may lie within the intent of my claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bottle-closure, comprising a spring-body adapted to embrace the neck of the bottle and having an' inwardly-extendingv shoulder at its upper end, said shoulder lying over the end of the bottle-neck, a spout projecting upward from the inner edge of said shoulder, a cover for the spout, and means for releasably holding the cover closed.
