Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed .Iuly Z5, 1905. Serial No. 271,175.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. SCHWORM, a citizen of the United States, residing at South N ewstead, in the county of Erie, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to buttons.
One object of the invention resides in the provision of an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient button of the character stated.
ith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, 'shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the members. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the second member.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly to Figs. l and 2, it will be seen that one form of the invention comprises a head 1, provided with a shank consisting of prongs 2 and 8, each prong near its upper end being bulged outwardly from the other prong, as at 4, with the extremities of the prongs forming the shank secured together. This button-head and its shank is designed to pierce the fabric and enter the spring- jaws 5 and 6 of the fastening 7, which latter has its jaws projecting into the sleeve S of the outer button-head 9. The sleeve 8 and the button-head 9 are formed of a single piece of material, the head 9 being of concavoconvex variety forming a depression in which the head of the fastening 7 is seated, the free end of the said sleeve being provided with a circular outwardly-extending iiange 10, designed to lie in parallel spacedrelation to the inner face of the inner button-head 1. NOW when it is desired to secure the button to a garment the shank of the button-head l is passed through the garment, and then the outer button-head presents its jaws 5 and 6 to the aforesaid shank, the latter, as stated, consisting of prongs having bulge portions, which bulge portions engage in the eye ll of the head of the aforesaid fastener. It will thus be understood that the button, while separable, is not liable to become disengaged by reason of the peculiar fastening of the heads, it being impossible to accidentally draw the head l through the head 9, or vice versa. It will also be seen that the garment l2 is clamped tightly between the inner face of the inner head l and the outer face of the flange 10 of the sleeve of the outer head 9.
What is claimed is- In a button, the combination with a head having an opening formed therethrough and flared toward the outer face of the head, of an inwardly-extending sleeve carried by the head in registration with the opening and having a flange at its inner end, a second head disposed in spaced relation to the flange for the reception of fabric between it and the flange, spaced prongs carried by the second head and extending through the sleeve and into the iiared portion of the opening of the first-named head, said prongs being bowed away from each other within the flared opening and then brought together to meet at their extre1nities,and a fastening member including spaced legs and a connecting-bight engaged with its legs between the prongs and the sleeve and with its bight in the flared opening and inclosing the bowed portions of the prongs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK D. SCHI/VORM.
