so-called covered button.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID M. J WALL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,551, dated March 28, 1882.
Application filed July 8, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. J. WALL, of Buffalo,in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to metallic buttons for garments; and it consistsin the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction,as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings already referred to, which serve toillustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is an elevation in section of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a Fig. 3 is an elevation of the fastening.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
A represents a button constructed of any suitable materiahmetal being preferred. This button has centrally a depression, A, and an aperture, A", provided with a cross-bar, a, which may be a separate piece or formed integral with the button A. Through the aperturesin said button is passed a staple, B, consisting of a disk having two prongs, b b, so as to form aslotted opening, I), as clearlyillustrated in Fig. 3, said prongs b b passing the cross-bar a.
E is a portion of a garment provided with my button and fastening.
To fasten this button to a garment, E,I first punch a hole into the cloth just large enough to pass the pron gs of the staple B, and insert the latterinto the opening thus formed. 1 now place the button upon the bifurcated fastening B in such manner that the cross-bar a will pass into the. slotted opening I) and push the button down upon the fork. This operation will cause the tines or prongs b b to open, and after the cross-bar a has passed into the opening I)" to close again, thus clinching onto said cross-bar and securely holding the button in position.
It is evident that this fastening is capable of being used on both an uncovered and a covered button, and I have shown its application to the latter in Fig. 2, where D is the cover for the button, and D a depression in the cover.
I am aware of the patents granted to Bates December 11, 1877, and September 3, 1878, in which a bifurcated staple orfastening is shown in conjunction with a button having a flange wherewith said fastening engages, and I do therefore not claim such as tnyinvention; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates-- In metallic buttons and fastenings, the combination, with the button A, having the de pression A and a cross-bar, a, of a fastening consisting of a disk, B,having centrally a slotted stud, b I), provided with a transverse aperture, b, said fastening being adapted for passage through the cloth or garment E,as described, and to hook onto the cross-bar a, sub stantially in the manner as and for the object stated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have hereto set my handin thev presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID J. WALL.
