IMPRovnD CHAIR-SEAT.

Be it known that I, CORNELIUS PLATT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvementin Chair- Seats; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying (hawings, and the letters of reference markedv thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, inev Y Figure l, a top view ofthe seating;

This invention is designed for an upholstered seating for common chairs, the seating itself being'an article of manufacture complete in itself, and which may be appliedto chairs of' the cheapest or best construction; and the invention consists in a body formed by a sheet of canvas `and sheet of pasteboard, or similar unelastic material, glued or secured together in similar manner, and this covered by any fabricated or flexible. material secured to the board and canvas, and stuffed 4between the covering and board, which completes the chair-bottom. v

To enable others to fully understand my invention, I Will describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings'.

a, is a sheet of canvas, or other fabricated material, cut to the proper form, according to the shape of the seat, anden to this is fitted a piece of pasteboard, or similar unelastic material, the two glued or gummed or stuck together in some manner, so as' to form prac tically one piece ofthe two parts. The edge of this I chamf'er, as seen in fig. 2, then cut from any suitable fabric or covering-material a form little larger than the board, and place it thereon, so as to leave the necessary slack in the covering, to admit the filling. This covering is secured to the board and canvas by gluing, or otherwise, leaving a short space upon the back side open; then through this space stuff the seat with any suitable material, as denoted in figs. 2 and 4.

The edge of the covering may be bound, if desirable, Y

or otherwise finished.

This completes my chair-seating, as an article of manufacture.

It is secured to the chair by gluing, or otherwise, to the frame, as seen in figs. 3 `and 4. A

The space which is left open at the back, as at j, g. 3, is closed by a screw,- or otherwise, so that if occasion may require, the stuffing may be renewed or replenished.

Chair-bottoms thus produced are very cheap and durable, and have a much nicer appearance than the ordinary cane-seat, at little if' any more expense.
