Description
No. 834,489. 'PATLNTED 00T. 3o, 190e., J. M. -PURDULL ADJUSTABLE BOX COVER HOLDER.
l APPLIcATIoN FILED JULY 2 1. 1905.
lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lJOHN MARKUS PURDUM, OF DURANT, INDIAN TERRITORY. ADJUSTABLE BOX-COVER HOLDER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MARKUS PUR- fDUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durant, Indian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Box-Cover Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to a device for supporting the lids or covers of boxes in an open position in order to display the contents of the latter, and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be adjusted so that the lid or cover of a box may be held in any desired position.
The invention comprises generally a pair of suitable attachments, such as spring clips or clamps, adapted to be removably attached to the lid'and the box, and a link pivotally connected at its ends to the attachmentsy and forming a support for the lid or cover in its open position, the parts being so arranged that one or both of the attachments may be adjusted for holding the lid or cover in any desired position.
The inventionconsists of the device hereinafter particularly described, and specified in the claim. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box of any suitable character having a hinged lid and showing my invention applied thereto and holding the lid. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but'showing the lid held wide open; and Fig. 3 is an elevation, partially in section, of the lid or cover support alone.
This invention is particularly adapted for supporting in a more or less open position the hinged lids of boxes containing cigars, lbakery goods, and other wares which it is desirable to display without removing the same from the boxes. I have illustrated the invention in connectionwith a simple form of box 10, provided with a hinged lid' or cover, as 11.
Adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to one wall of the box is an attachment which may take the form of a spring-clip 12, consisting 4,of a plate of preferably resilient metal bent upon itself, as shown, to provide a pair of spring-jaws which when the clip is in osition grip or clamp between them the wail of the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A second attachment, which may also take the form of a spring-clip 13, similar to the clip 12, is designed to embrace the lid at the edge adjacent to the end or side of the box to which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 21,1905. Serial No. 270,624.
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
the'clip 12 is secured. Connecting the clipsA 12 and 13 is a link 14, one end of which is pivoted to the clip 13, as by having its end bent at a right angle thereto and passed through an aperture in the clip between the jaws of the clip, the extremity of the said end being headed, as at 15, Fig. 3, in order that the end of the link lmay turn freely in the clip, The other end of the link is pivotally attached to the clip 12, being provided with a hooked end or loop 16, engaging anaperture in the clip 12 between the jaws of the same.
When the device is in position, the clips 12 and 13 engage the adjacent side or end edges of the box and lid or cover, respectively, as
readily slid along by hand to any desired position, such movement being permitted by' reason of the jointed connection of the link with the clips. In practice, however, it has been found more convenient to adjust the lid to the desired angle of opening by sliding the clip 12 along the wall of the box to Which it is attached.
The device is exceedingly simple in construction and inexpensive of manufacture, and by reason of the detachable and adjustable clips employed it may be readily attached in position and adjusted to hold the lid at any desired elevation and may be removed frorn one box when the latter becomes empty and used again and as often 4as desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A device of the class described, comprising a pair of spring-clips adapted to detachably and slidingly engage a box and thev hinged lid thereof to support the latter, and a link to the ends of which the cli s are pivotally y JOHN MARKUS PURDUM.
