UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRUIT-JAR OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed December 27, 1905. Serial. No- 293,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM WALLACE CRQNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Kisco, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar'Openers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for opening fruit-jars, such as glass jars and other jars of this class; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by l which this operation may be performed quickly and easily without danger of breaking the ar or the cover thereof.
It is a well-known fact that in the use of jars of the class specified when made of any material, and especially when made of glass or similar material, the cover or cap frequently becomes set so that it cannot be removed by hand; but with my improvement this operation may be easily performed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters, said drawing being a perspective view of a can or jar opener made according to my invention.
In the practice of my invention I provide a main segmental jaw g and a supplemental segmental jaw it, said jaws being pivoted together at one end, as shown at i, and the jaw g is provided at the end opposite the pivotal point i with a projecting handle member 1c, in which is pivoted a lever m, which also serves as a handle member and which passes through a slot formed in the handle'member Zr and the adjacent end of the aw g, and said lever is pivoted in said slot at 111. and the inner end thereof is pivotallyconnected with a link a, which is pivotally connected with the adjacent end of the jaw h. The aws g and 7b are also provided on their inner or adjacent faces with oppositely-directed teeth 9 and 72, and the operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement. The lever m is bent centrally, as shown at m, so as to enable the outer or handle end thereof to approach adjacent to the handle member 76 of the jaw g, and in the operation of this device the cap or cover of thecan or jar is placed between the jaws g and It, and the can or ar is held'in one hand and the handle member is of the jaw g and the outer end portion or handle portion of the lever m are grasped in the other hand and forced together, and this forces the jaws g and 7t into contact with the cap or cover of the can or jar, and then by turning the device the cap or cover will be removed from the can or jar, as will be readily understood.
The cap or cover of cans or jars of the class specified is usually screwed on and frequently becomes firmly attached to or set on the neck of-the can or jar, so that it cannot be removed by hand; but with my improvement this operation can be easily performed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, comprising main and supplemental segmental j aws pivotally connected at one end, the main jaw being provided at its opposite end with a projecting handle, said main jaw and the handle thereof being provided with a slot, a supplemental handle member pivoted in said slot, and a link connecting the inner end of the supplemental handle member and the supplemental jaw, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising main and supplemental segmental jaws pivotally connected at one end, the main jaw being provided at its opposite end with a projecting handle, said main jaw and the handle thereof being provided with a slot, a sup lemental handle member pivoted in said s 0t, and a link connecting the inner end of the supplemental'handle member and the supplemental jaw, said jaws being provided in their adjacent faces with oppositely-directed teeth, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of December, 1905.
