UNITED STATES FRANK BROIVN, OF RANDOLPH, NEYV YORK.
PATENT OFFICE.
CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,862, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed February 26, 1896. Serial No. 580,766. (No model.)
To aZZ 1071 0122, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WV. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in can-openers, and the object is to provide an implement of the kind named and for the purposes mentioned which is simple in construction and efficient in operation and which will operate equally well in opening metal cans or removing the caps of sealed glass jars, as hereinafter will be fully disclosed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View of the implement. Fig. 2 is a view showing its application to the neck of a glass jar to remove the cap. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a detached portion of the in1- plement, showing a modified construction of the hinge-joint.
A designates the implement, consisting of two jaws 1 1 curved at their upper ends and hinged together, as at 2, by any suitable means, the connection being made strong enough to serve the purposes intended. The circular or curved portions of the jaws are made wedge-shaped on the inner edges, as at 3, and each jaw formed with teeth a 4?, arranged to run in cutting direction opposite to each other, as shown. This construction adapts the implement for grasping a metal can between the jaws, and then by turning the implement 40 by the handles around, back and forth, while clamped or held to the can the metal is cut or sawed through and the top severed, or by )glacing the jaws in the line between a glass cap and the surface on which it rests on a jar and pressing the handles inward the wedge shaped edges of the jaws are forced in between the cap and the jar and the cap thus lifted, so that it can be easily removed from the can or jar.
In Fig. at of the drawings is shown a modified connection of the hinge-joint wherein the adjacent ends of the curved jaws are coincidently slotted and a hinge-pin arranged and suitably secured therein, so that the implement may be adapted to jars of different diameters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A can-opener, comprising two jaws hinged together and formed with circular upper ends, and integral handles, and the jaws thereof having inner sharpened edges, and saw-teeth arranged in opposite directions on the said edges, the said jaws being slotted at their outer ends, and a hinge-pin projected through and secured in the said slots, whereby the device may adapt itself to jars or cans of various sizes, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
