Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. SAYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burning-Brands and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful iniprovements in the class of burning-brands, and embodies the novel features herein set forth. l

In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood, I have clearly illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, and a full and exact description thereof is contained in the annexed specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view o f my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional viewithrough the holder. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through theholder. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a letter. Fig. 5 is an end view of my device. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of a slightly-modiiied form of holder, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of my modied construction.

In the several views like letters of reference designate similar parts of my device.

A in the drawings designates the base or back of the holder, comprising an iron bar provided with a convex face ct--that is to say, a face similar to a section of a cylinder-and it is with this meaning that I use the word convex both here and in the claims, the highest point of the curve being at the center of the bar and directly opposite the enlarged portion a, in which the handle B is cast in any well-known manner, said handle Bbeing radially disposed to the curved face of said back.

C is the face-plate of the holder, comprising a copper plate which is formed with a longitudinally-extending central cavity c and a slot c', forming a letter-retaining channel, said cha-miel being closed at one end but open at the other. The face-plate C is bent to conform with the curvature of the face (L of the back A and is secured thereto in any suitable manner.

D designates the letters adapted to slide freely in the slot c and provided with flaring base portions (Z, adapted to ht within and l slide in the central cavity c, said flaring base portions retaining the letters in the holder when the same is inverted for use. E is a gate fulcrumed on a screw e, secured in the end of the back A. This gate E is fulcrumed eccentrically, so that when the holder .is inverted it will fall by gravity and close the open slot and recess, thus preventing the letters from slipping out. a3 is a projection on the end of the base A and is adapted to engage the edge of the gate E, acting as a stop to maintain the gate in a closed position when desired, while the brand is in the position shown in Fig. 5.

The construction illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 is substantially like that illustrated in Figs. l to 5, except that instead of forming the holder of a straight bar and face-plate I employ a curved bar A and a correspondinglycurved face-plate C.

Vith the construction above described it is obvious that the letters may be readily inserted into the holder and may be removed therefrom after use but while still hot by simply tipping the holder sidewise until the gate falls, opening `the slot c and central cavity c, after which the holder may be tilted endwise to permit the letters to slide out of the holder after which new ones may be inserted. After other letters have been inserted it is apparent that by merely inverting the holder the gate E will close by gravity the slot and prevent the letters from accidentally sliding out. Furthermore,it is obvious that by constructing the holder as described the same can be rocked to bring every letter in contact with the surface to be branded in case the same has become warped, which is generally true in the case of barrel-heads, which become warped in their center after long standing, thus making it practically impossible to obtain a distinct brand with a flat stamp. By curving the holder, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, it is apparent that it is possible to make a distinct brand following the chime of the barrel, which is practically impossible with curved brands provided with a flat face.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a burning-brand, the combination with a holder provided with a letter-retaining channel, of detachable letters having portions adapted to it into said channel and IOO means for automatically locking the letters in said channel, substantially as described.

2. In a burning-brand, the combination with a holder provided with a letter-retaining channel, said channel being closed at one end and means for automatically closing the other end of said channel, substantially as described.

3. In a burning-brand, the combination With a holder provided Withacurved channel, of detachable letters having portions adapted to fit into said channel, said channel being adapted to retain said letters in such a position that they Will present a convex branding surface and means for automatically locking the letters in said channel, substantially as described.

4. In a burning-brand, the combination With a holder provided With a channel closed at one end and open at the other end, of detachable letters having portions adapted to t into said channel, said channel being adapted to retain said letters in such a position that they Will present a convex branding-surface, of a gate pivoted on the end of seav said holder and adapted to fall by gravity to open and close said channel and a stop on said holder adapted to prevent the vmovement of said gate in one direction, substantially as described.

5. In a burning-brand, the combination with a back having a curved surface, of afaceplate provided With a letterretaining channel open at one end, said face-plate being curved to conform With said curved face of said back and being secured thereto, a gate pivoted to the end of said back and being adapted to fall by gravity to open and close said channel, a stop adapted to prevent movement of said gate in one direction and a handle secured to said back, said handle being radially disposed to said curved surface of said back, substantially as described.
