LOCKING DEVICE.
[o all 'whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK E. Nononoss, EDGAR ALLAN SOLOMON, and WILLIAM H. Bocinas, citizens of the United States, the two former residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, and the latter residing at Merchantville, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Locking Device, of which the following is a specification. v
Our invention relates to a new and useful locking device and consists of means whereby two members may be easily and quickly connected and disconnected and when con nected will be held in a iirm and durable manner. i
It further consists of novel features of construction all as will be hereinafter set forth.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of portions of two members with our novel locking device in position. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line w-az Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the locking bolt in detached position. Figs. 5 and 6 represent elevations of locking pins which may be employed. Fig. 7 represents a plan view of a portion of one of the members showing the opening through which the locking pin passes.

Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the top of a bureau or other article having a back 2, and 3 designates a standard or a support which is to be connected. A mortise is formed in the back of the bureau, and a casing, 4, having flanges, 5, at the edges of its sides is secured in said mortise, prefer,
ably by screws, 6, passing through said flanges.
In the upper wall of the casing we provide an opening 7 which is in register with an opening 8 in the back 2 and top 1, and as here shown we provide an opening 9 in the Specicaton of Letters Patent.

11 designates a locking bolt which preferably is of suitable thickness to engage the top and bottom wall of said casing 4, said bolt having an opening 12 therein which in proper position of the bolt is in register with the openings 7 and 9 in the walls of said casing. The bolt also has a slot 13 communicating with Opening 12. At a suitable point, the lower wall of the bolt 11 is inclined as at 14, forming a cam face, the inclination, as here shown extending from a suitable point at the opening 12 to a point near the rear end of the bolt. A pin 15 passes through slot 13 and engages the walls of the casing which assists in guiding the lock 4 in its movement and retains lock 4 in casing, after 3 is detached.
Carried by the other member to be connected is the coperating means for the bolt, the same consisting of a locking pin 16 which is provided with a head 17 and having a neck 18.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the neck 18 has the iiat faces 19 and the upper wall of the head 17 is inclined, as at 20. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 the neck 18 is round.
The operation of the device will be apparent.
The locking bolt is moved to a position to place the opening 12 in register with the openings in the casing 4 and in the back and top. The locking pin is now passed through the openings until the neck 18 is in line with the slot 13 when by moving over the bolt the neck will be seated in the slot with the top wall of the head in engagement with the inclined face 14 of the bolt 11, which actuation causes a tightening of the parts and a drawing together of the members 1 and 3 firmly locking the same with respect to each other, as will be evident. By moving the bolt in the opposite direction, the parts are loosened and when the openings are in alinement, the pin 16 can be removed. The locking pin has full support in the openings through the top and back of the bureau and the openings in the casing, and the lower end of said pin fits into the recess 10 registering with the openings, so that the locking pin will have support substantially through its entire length, thereby rendering the connection for the mirrorestandard firm and secure.
As it is preferable to move the bolt by a suitable instrument, we provide the shoulders 2l and 22 for engagement thereby. The locking-bolt having a sliding iit in the casing and being retained within the same by the pin, said bolt will be irmly guided 1n its casing and retained in the saine when the bolt is unlocked and the mirror-standard and its pin removed.
By locating the wedge-shaped locking bolt in the casing which opens in the rear face of the back of the bureau, said bolt is easily accessible to be driven home or released, and the back will not be marred by the tool employed in driving the bolt, being protected by the casing. As the casings and the recesses for the same are below the upper side of the top and the edge of the back of the bureau, the headed locking-pins have a long and firm bearing in the top and back, whereby the standards are rigidly supported.
Other modes of applying the principle of our invention may lbe employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclo-sed, provided the principles of construction set forth, respectively, in the following claim is employed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing comprising a top and a bottom plate formed with registering openings and a locking-bolt or" substantially uniform thickness at the two ends sliding in said casing, the casing being longer than the bolt; the locking-bolt having an opening adapted to register with the openings in the casing and a longitudinal slot extending from said opening, and having a wedge-surface on its under side terminating between its ends; and a headed locking-pin adapted to have its head pass through the openings of the casing and bolt when registering; and
to have its head engaged by the wedge-sur il face of the locking-bolt when the latter is slid` into locking position. Y
