Be it known that I, NATHANIEL 8018, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cane Seat, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in chairs or seats designed when not in use as a seat to be compactly folded, so that it may be conveniently carried in the hand and serve as a cane; and the object is to provide a device of this character that will be light in weight, yet strong and serviceable, makingit particularly useful for tourists, artists, seashore visitors, and the like.

I will describe a cane seat embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 shows the device folded or in the form of a cane. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the device as arranged for a seat. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 4is an inner face view of the upper portion of the device. Fig. 5 is a partial section and partial side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9 9 of Fig. 2.

The cane seat comprises a body portion 1, made hollow or trough-shaped, and upon the upper end of which is a suitable handle or knob 2. Side sections 3 4 have hinged connections 5 6 at their upper ends with the body portion 1. These side portions 3 4 are designed to fold closely against the body portion when the device is used as a cane, as clearly indicated in Figs. 4 and 5; but when the device is used as a seat these side portions 3 4 are to be swung out to a horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. 3, and when extended outward are divergent relatively to each other. These side portions are made hollow or trough-shaped, and the opposite edges of a seat 7 are secured in these side pieces,which seat is made of suitable flexible material-- such, for instance, as lightcanvasand when the parts are folded this seat material is to be inclosed within the chamber formed by the body portion 1 and the side pieces 3 and 4.

Pivotally connected with or having hinged connection with the lower ends of the side pieces 3 and 4 are sections 8 9, which when the device is folded form the extension of the cane, and when the device is open these parts 8 and 9 form the front legs of the seat.

The hinges. by means of which the side pieces 3 and 4 are connected to the body portion consist of ears 10 and 11, extended divergently from the body portion 1, and a central boss '12. The pintles of the hinges extend through the ears and into the boss 12, and box-like portions 13 are mounted on the pintles and are secured at their outer ends in the ends of the side pieces.

It may be here stated that all the parts above described, excepting the seat 7, are to be made of metal, so as to secure sufficient strength with lightness.

Brace-rods 14 15 are pivotally connected with the side pieces 3 and 4 and have hooks at their free ends to engage with pins 17 18, arranged in the upper portion of the body 1, the said portion being provided with slots 19 20, into which the braces may pass to engage the pin.

The portions 8 and 9 are braced relatively to the side pieces when in open position by means of rods 21 22, pivotally connected to the side pieces and mounted to move on guiderods 23, arranged in the sections 8 and 9. The sections 8 and 9 are braced relatively to each other when in open position by means of upper braces 24 25, which are pivotally connected together at their lower ends and at their upper ends have pivotal connection with said sections 8 and 9, and lower braces 26 27 have their lower ends pivotally connected to the sections 8 and 9, and at their upper ends they are pivotally connected together by means of a bolt 28, which is of suificient length to engage over the braces 24 and 25, and the said bolt has an enlarged head 29 to engage against the inner sides of said upper braces, so as to prevent the upper braces from moving rearward out of engagement with the lower braces.

Connected to the bolt which pivotallyconnects the upper braces 24 and 25 is an upwardly-extended plate 30, provided with a longitudinal slot, through which the bolt 28 passes. This plate forms a guide to hold the several braces 24 25, 26, and 27 in proper po' sition while folding the device or opening it. The sections 8 and 9 are made hollow, so as to receive said upper and lower braces when the device is folded, and when the device is folded the braces 21 and 22 and 14 and 15 will be folded into the side sections with the seat material 7.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cane seat, comprising a hollow body portion, side pieces pivotally connected to the body portion and mounted to swing divergently, a seat material secured to said side pieces, and extension-pieces pivotally connected to the lower ends of the side pieces, substantially as specified.

2. A cane seat, comprising a hollow body portion, hollow side pieces mounted to swing on the body portion so as to diverge from the body portion, a seat material secured to the side pieces and adapted to be folded into the space within the body portion of the side pieces, and extension-pieces having hinged connection with the lower ends of the side pieces, substantially as specified.

3. A cane seat, comprising a hollow body portion, hollow side pieces mounted to swing divergently relatively to the body portion, a seat material secured to said side pieces and adapted to be folded into the same when the device is closed, extension-pieces mounted to swing on the lower ends of the side pieces, braces for connecting the side pieces and said extension -pieces, and braces extended between the said side pieces and the body portion, all of said braces being adapted to be folded into the device, substantially as specified.

4. A cane seat, comprising a body portion,

side pieces having hinged connection with the body portion so as to swing divergently therefrom, a seat material secured to the side pieces, extension-pieces having swinging connection with the side pieces, and folding braces connecting said extension-pieces, substantially as specified.

5. A cane seat, comprising a body portion, side pieces mounted to swing on the body portion, a seat material secured to the side pieces and adapted to fold within the same, extension-pieces having swinging connection with the lower ends of the side pieces, lower braces pivotally connected at the lower ends to the extension-pieces and pivoted together at their upper ends, upper braces pivotally connected at their upper ends to the extension-pieces and pivoted together at their lower ends, the said braces being adapted to fold within the extension-pieces, and brace-rods having pivotal connection with the side pieces and sliding connection with the extension-pieces, substantially as specified.
