Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVIER BLAIS, OF BROMPTONVILLE, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO J. ELIE BILODEAU, OF BROMPTONVILLE, CANADA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed May 19, 1906. Serial No. 317,829.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVIER BLAIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bromptonville, county of Richmond, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rail-joints.
The object of my invention is to provide a rail-joint in which the beveled meeting ends of the rails are provided withmeans permitting expansion and contraction and adapted to maintain the sides of the rail parallel and the same distance apart.
A further object is to provide a rail-joint of the character described with removable wear-blocks which will distribute the frictional wear evenly on both sides of the block; and my invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section on line 1 1 of Fig. 3, showing the position of the parts with the rails-in expanded position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 1 1 of Fig. 3, showing the position of the parts with the rails in contracted position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away; and Fig. 4 is a perspective of a wear-block.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a tie on which is disposed the abutting ends of the rails 2, which rails are provided with the vertical beveled faces or ends 3. the rails are maintained together by means of the slotted fish-plates 4 and bolts 5.
To permit expansion and contraction, the rails are provided with horizontal slots 6, through which the bolts 5 are disposed. The beveled faces 3 are provided with rectangular recesses 7, which intersect the slots 6, and
The ends of the bolts have thereon the nuts 8. Disposed in the recesses 7 are rectangular blocks 9, provided with slots 10, adapted to register with the slots 6 in the rails and to permit the passage of the bolts 5. I
In Fig. 1 the position of the parts is clearly shown when the rails are in the expanded position. rails are shortened, the parts assume the position best shown in Fig. 2. This sliding of the rails upon each other is permitted by the removable blocks 9, and when the movement occurs the walls of the recesses 7 slide on the blocks 9, so that the sides of the rails are maintained parallel and at the same distance apart. If the beveled faces 3 were permitted to slide on each other, contraction of the rails would permit the joint to become narrower, and expansion would force the opposite edges of the oint farther apart.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A rail-joint comprising a pair of abutting rails having beveled faces, wear-blocks disposed between the beveled faces, and means for holding the blocks in position.
2. A rail-joint comprising two abutting rails having beveled faces provided with recesses therein, wear-blocks disposed in the recesses, and means for holding the blocks in position.
3. A rail-joint comprising a pair of oppositely-disposed rails provided with recesses therein, wear-blocks disposed in the recesses, and bolts disposed through the rails and throu h the blocks.
4. rail-joint comprising a pair of abutting rails, wear-blocks removably disposed between the meeting faces of the rails, and means for securing the blocks in position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
DONAT BOISVERT, A. B. BRANDT.
