RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914.
Application filed June 12, 1914. Serial No. 844,726.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEorHILUs Ronnnrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristow, in the county of Creek, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rail joints.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a rail joint embodying an improved construction designed to prevent relative lateral movement between the rail ends and in which the weight of the train passing over the joint will always be disposed upon both rails.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a rail joint con structed in accordance with the invention, same disclosing the outer side of the joint; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the joint; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the rail ends of the joint; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the other rail end of the joint, and Fig. 5, a perspective view of the locking plate of the joint.
Referring to the drawings A and B iI1dicate respectively the ends of adjacent rails. he rail A has the end of its ball scarfed as at 10. The web of the rail A is removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the end of the ball and scarfed as at 11 in a manner similar to the ball. The base of the rail A is removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the web and scarfed as at 12 oppositely to the scarfed terminals of the web and ball. The base of the rail B has its end scarfed as at 13 to correspond with the scarfed end of the base of the rail A. The web of the rail B is removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the scarfed end of the base and is scarfed as at 14 to correspond with the scarfed end 11 of the web of the rail e ball of the rail B is removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the scarfed end of the web and is scarfed as at 15 to correspond with the scar-fed terminal 10 of the ball of the rail A. With the rail sections thus constructed it will be obvious that the scarfed ends of the balls, webs and bases thereof will abut each other when the rail sections are assembled in the joints. It will be further obvious that a portion of the ball of the rail A will rest upon a portion of the web of the rail B, and further that a portion of the web of the rail A will rest upon a portion of the base ofthe rail B so that the weight of a train passing over the joint will be constantly exerted upon both of the rail sections A and B.
The webs of the rails A and B are provided respectively with mating longitudinalrecesses 16 and 17 opening through the scarfed ends of the web. The inner ends of the recesses 16 and 17 are provided with dove tail enlargements l8 and 19 respectively for a purpose that will presently appear. The improved joint further embodies a plate 20 disposed against the outer sides of the webs of the rails A and B, said plate being provided on its inner side with a longitudinal rib 21 provided with dove tail terminals 22. This rib 21 seats in the recesses l6 and 17 with the dove tail portions 22 disposed in the dove tail enlargements 18 and 19 of the recesses 16 and 17 and in this way the rail sections A and B are locked against relative longitudinal movement. The rib 21 is provided with an extension 23 disposed in the plane of said rib and having a slot 24 therein running parallel to the webs of the rails A and B. This extension 23 projects through a washer plate 25 disposed against the outer sides of the webs of the rails A and B, the outer face of said washer plate being disposed substantially flush with the inner wall of the slot 24. Engaged through the slot 24 is a wedge 26 through the manipulation of which the plate 20 and washer 25 are clamped upon the webs of the rails A and B to prevent any lateral movement of the rails relative to each other. The wedge 26 is secured against disengagement from the slot 24 by means of set screws 27 mounted in the extension 23.
What is claimed is In a rail joint, a pair of rail ends one of which has its web removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the end of its ball and its base a predetermined distance inwardly of the end of its Web, and the other havingits Web removed a predetermined distance inwardly of the end of its base, the Webs of said rail ends being provided With mating longitudinal recesses having dove-tail enlargements at. their lnner ends, a locking plate disposed agalnst the outer sides of the sion" on said rib provided With a slot parallel t0 the Webs of the rail sections, a washer plate engaged on said extension and bearing against the inner sides of the Webs, and a Wedge engaged through said slot.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
