The invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and particularly of the type known as pipe-wrenches.
The mainobject ofthe present invention is the production in a wrench of the class described of means adapted to automatically teeth 8, and within the sli adjust' or tighten the wrench during its operative engagement with the pipe, whereby positive action of the wrench is assured and slipping during use wholly obviated.
V The preferred details of construction will be described in the following speciiication, reference being had particularly to 'the accompanying drawings, whereinf Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with `my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the movable jaw of the wrench being shown in vertical section.l Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the sliding jaw. IFig. 4 is a transverse section illustrating the parts in coperative relation.
Referring to the drawings, my improved wrench comprises the usual shank 1, provided at one end with a handle 2 and at the opposite end with the ordinary iixed jaw 3, preferably formed with serrations or teeth 4 on its operative face, as is usual in wrenches of this type. y
5 represents what I term the sliding jaw, preferably comprising av hollow bodydesigned to embrace the shank 1, being preferably provided adjacent the side faces of the shank with vertically-arranged ribs' 6, designed for coperative engagement with longitudinal channels 7, formed inthe adjacent faces of the shank, whereby the sliding jaw is positively guided in vertical movement.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 2 5 1. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw, a movable jaw,. a sliding section carried by the jaw, and means other than said section and adapted for operation thereby to force the sliding )aw toward the fixed aw in the operation of the wrench.
2. A wrench comprising a fixed aw and a y.movable jaw, movable means carried by said latter jaw vto coperate with the fixed jaw, n'leallS adapted to force said movable jaw toward the fixed jaw in the operation of the movable .means in one direction.
3. A wrench comprising a fixed aw, a movable jaw, means carried by said latter jaw to 4oA aw, and means carried by the movable jaw to coperate with said feeding means to force the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw in the feed the movable `jaw to and from the fixed Y operation of the wrench.

A wrench comprising a shank formed with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw embracing the shank, the forward face of the shank being formed with teeth, a gear-pinion mounted within the movable jaw and arranged to engage tlie teeth on the shank, a inevable section carried by the movable jaw and adapted to coperate with the fixed jaw, and a tooth depending from said section and adapted on movement of the section to engage and opel'- ate the pinion, and means for returning said movable section to normal position.
7. A wrench comprising a shank formed 'with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw embracing the shank, the forward face of the shank being formed with teeth, a gear-pinion mounted within the movable jaw and arranged to engage the teeth on the shank, a movable section carried by the movable jaw and adapted to coperate with the fixed jaw, and a tooth depending from said section and adapted. on movement of the section to engage and operate the pinion, and means for securing said movable -jaw in adjusted position with relation to the fixed jaw.

A wrench comprising a shank formed with a fixed jaw, a movable aw embracing the shank, the forward face of the shank being formed with teeth, a gear-pinion mounted within the movable aw and arranged to engage the teeth on the shank, a movable section carried by the movable aw and adapted to coperate with the fixed aw, and a tooth depending from said section and adapted on movement of the section to engage and operate the pinion, and an arm movably mounted in the movable liaw and adapted to coperate with the teeth on the shank.
9. A wrench coinpiising a shank formed with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw embracing the shank, the forward face of the shank being formed with teeth, a gear-pinion mounted within the movable jaw and arranged to engage the teeth on the shank, a movable section carried by the movable jaw and adapted to coperate with the fixed jaw, and a `tooth depending from said section and adapted on movement of the section to engage and operate the pinion, and a spring housed within the movable section and terminally connected to said section and to the movable jaw.
10. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed aw, a sliding jaw movable on the shank, feeding means carried by the sliding aw to coperate with the shank, and means independent of the feeding means and carried by the sliding aw, said latter means being adapted to operate the feeding means in the use of the wrench.
