To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LEPPERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tippecanoe City, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in wagontops especially adapted for use on market-wagons and other vehicles where it is desirable to provide a shelter in the rear of the wagon.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide an adjustable top adapted to fit wagons of different heights, so that the same top may be used on several different wagons.

Another object is to obtain a top of this nature which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and which can be easily applied to any ordinary wagon by the purchaser without changing the construction of the stationary wagon-top and removed by him when not required.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be observed later on in this specification.

The invention consists, broadly, of a supplemental pivoted top superimposed upon the fixed roof of the wagon-body and adapted to rest upon said fixed roof or top in its extended and withdrawn positions.

The invention also consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagonbody with my improved extensible top in Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the supplemental top extended and the awnings raised. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the uncovered frame of the supplemental top with the means of attaching it to the body of a wagon, and Fig. 5 is a broken detail view of my preferred means for holding the awnings in a raised position.

It is contemplated to manufacture the top in the form shown in Fig. 4, so that it can be fastened to the wagon by the purchaser and covered by any material that he desires. It

may of course be sold on new vehicles as well, and it may be covered by the manufacturer.

As shown in the drawings 1 is the main top or body of a wagon, to the sides of which are secured the brackets 2, each of which is provided with a vertical series of notches or perforations 3, allowing for the vertical adjustment of the supplemental top 4 to suit wagons of different heights. The horizontal plates or bars 5, to which are pivoted the swinging supports 6 for the supplemental top, are provided with central angular offset portions 7, fitting around the vertical brackets 2 to prevent rocking movement of said plates 5 when secured by means of bolts 8 and thumbnuts 9, said bolts passing through certain of the perforations 3 in said vertical brackets and perforations in the offset portion of said horizontal rods The supports 6 are pivoted at their upper ends to the supplemental top at about the same distance apart as they are at their lower ends and nearer the forward end of said supplemental top. When said supplemental top is thrown rearward, it proj ects beyond the fixed top of the vehicle, forming a shelter at the rear of the wagon. This shelter is increased by the awnings 10,

hinged to the sides of the supplemental top and adapted to be held in a raised position by means of straps 11 (shown in Fig. 4) or the rods 12 and set-screw 13. (Shown in Fig. 2.) My preferred means for holding up said awnings is shown in Fig. 5 and consists of a rod 14, hinged to the supplemental top and having at its outer end a series of notches with rearwardly-extending teeth 15. Said teeth are adapted to engage a cross-pin 16 of a bracket 17, secured to the lower edge of the awning, said bracket preferably provided with another cross-pin 17, arranged above the first one to restrict the outward movement of the rod.

It will be noted that the main or fixed top of the wagon forms a stop means for the supplemental top at both its extended and retracted positions. It will also be observed that when withdrawn and the awnings are lowered the supplemental top lies close to the fixed top of the vehicle and does not project therefrom to get in the way, nor does its presence hinder the use of a wagon for ordinary purposes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A supplemental top for vehicles adapted to be arranged above, and to be pivoted to, the main top of a vehicle, said supplemental top also adapted to be extended beyond the main top and to rest upon said main top.

2. A supplemental top for vehicles adapted to be pivoted to the to of the vehicle and to be extended beyond t e main top of said vehicle and means to adjust said top to fit vehicle-tops of different heights.

7. The combination with a fixed top of a vehicle, of a swinging supplemental top arranged above said fixed top and adapted to be extended beyond the rear end of the fixed top, said fixed top forming a stop means for the supplemental top.

8. The combination with the body and top of a vehicle, brackets secured to said body,

and plates secured to said brackets, of a swinging supplemental top connected to said plates by pivoted rods, said supplemental top ada ted to be extended beyond the rear end of t e fixed top, said fixed top forming a stop means for the supplemental top.

9. The combination with a pivoted awning, of a rod pivoted above said awning, said rod havin a series of teeth extending toward its pivoted end, and a bracket secured to the outer edge of the awning and provided with a cross-pin adapted to be engaged by the teeth I on said rod to hold said awning in a raised po sition.
