Description

No. 809,756. PATBNTED JAN. 9, 1906.

BAG FASTBNER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 6. 1904.
EDl VIN G. STAUDE, OF. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BAG-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906;
Application filed September 6, 1904. Serial No. 223,822.
To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. STAUDE, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for securing the closed mouth of a bag or sack; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive fastener which can be easily and quickly applied and one which will securely close the mouth of the bag and prevent escape of its contents.
The invention consists generally in a metallic tape or ribbon having oppositelyturned hooked ends.
In the accompanying drawings, forming,
part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a metallic fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the fastener folded with its ends about to interlock. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the ends of the fastener locked together. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view through the middle of the fastener shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the top of a sack, showing my improved fastener thereon.
In the drawings, 2 represents the fastener, consisting of a narrow flexible tape or ribbon, preferably of metal, having oppositelyturned hooked ends 3, that are adapted to interlock when the ribbon is folded around the closed mouth of a sack and hold the fastener in place thereon. After being interlocked the ends are preferably subjected to pressure to squeeze them together and prevent their. The ribbon is preferaccidental separation. ably provided with a longitudinal rib 4, extending along the middle line of the ribbon and serving to stiffen the same and permit the use of a lighter gage of metal. The rib also hasthe effectof making the fastener more resilient.
The rib is formed on one side of the ribbon by a depression or groove runninglengthwise of the ribbon on the other side, and when the oppositely-turned ends of the ribbon are brought together the rib on one hook will drop into the groove on the depression of the other hook on the opposite side of the ribbon and lock the two ends against lateral movement, preventing them from becoming accidentally separated while the fastener is in use.
The device is designed for use particularly on floursacks, especially those made of paper, which cannot be securely sewed; but obviously the fastener can be applied to a cloth sack as well. The fastener may be made of any suitable length, according to the size of the sack and the thickness of the paper or cloth of which it is composed, and any suitable width of ribbon may be employed to obtain the necessary strength.
I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a bag: fastener consisting of a flexible ribbon having a rib on one side extending from end to end of the ribbon and formed by making a longitudinal depression or groove in the other side, and said ends being oppositely turned to form hooks and the rib on one hook entering the groove or depression in the other hook when they are placed together whereby lateral movement of one hook with respect to the other when the fastener is in use is prevented.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a bag fastener consisting of a flexible metallic ribbon having a rib on one side extending from end to end along the middle line of the ribbon and formed by making a longitudinal depression in the other side, the ends of said ribbon being oppositely turned to form hooks that are adapted to interlock, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a bagfastener consisting of a flexible ribbon adapted to be folded in a circular form around the closed mouth of a sack and having its ends In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of August, 1904.
