To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. LOOKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, inthe county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates primarily to improve ments especially adapted to provide asimple, strong, and effective union between the side rail and the end rail of a bed, and also a simple and effective connection between the woven-wire fabric and the end rail. These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by my invention, a convenient embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the woven-wire fabric removed. Fig. Sis a view of the end rail and connected casting. Fig. 4. is a sectional detail of one corner of the structure. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the corner-casting, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4: looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawlngs.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a leg, 2 a side rail, and 3 an end rail, of a bedstead, upon which is mounted the side rails 6, united by the corner-castings 7.

8 is the woven-wire fabric, provided at each end with a metal binding 9.

As shown, the end rails of the spring-bottom are made of channel-iron, and the metallic binding of the fabric, which is made in accordance with the Locklin and Fox patent, No. 655,253, and is therefore doubled twice upon itself, is again bent to form a loop or hook, which engages the outwardly-extending horizontal flange of the end rail 5, and thus holds the fabric in place, the double bending of the metal binding upon itself in order to effectively bind the fabric giving it such strength that when again bent to form said hook or loop it affords a simple but reliable and strong connection between the fabric and the end rail. My present invention, however, more particularly relates to the connection between the end rail and side rails of the bed-bottom.

The end rails 5 are secured to the cornercastings 7, which project downwardly from the end rails such a distance that the fabric 8 will be sufliciently lifted above the side rail 2 of the bedstead. The corner castings or brackets 7 are provided with outwardly-extending flanges A, adapted to rest upon the side rails of the bed. Each casting 7 is provided with an integral and outwardly-projecting lug or tongue B and with a flange C so arranged as to provide a socket between the projection B and the flange C. The ends of the side rails 6 are preferably hollow, and in the preferred construction the side rails 6 are simply lengths of iron tubing. The lugs or projections B are split, as shown, the opposite faces of the respective halves tapering inwardly toward the casting 7. A bolt 10 projects through the casting 7 into the space between the halves of the lug Band is provided with a nut 11, which is threaded upon said bolt and is adapted to non-rotatably engage the lug B.

In assembling the parts the end of a side rail 6 is fitted over the lug B and into the socket between the lug B and flange C. where upon the bolt 10 is rotated, thus drawing the nut 11 inwardly and spreading the sections of the lug B, thus tightly clamping the side rail to the casting 7, while at the same time, since the lug'B' and the flange C are integral parts of the casting 7, the side rail 6 is directly supported by said ing and the lower part of said flange (J, while, since the lug B preferably projects some distance into the side rall 6, a bearing is provided to support the structure as against the tension or weight upon the fabric 8.

WhileI have shown my invention embodied in what I consider its preferred form, I do not confine myself thereto; but my invention contemplates various departures therefrom.

I claim 1. The combinationwith an end rail and a side rail of a spring-bed, of abracket secured to said end rail and provided with a socket to receive the end of the side rail, means integral with said bracket for clamping said side rail into position, and means for operating said clamping device.

2. The combination with a bracket provided with a socket, of a member adapted to fit within said socket, means integral with said bracket for supporting said member, and

means for spreading one of said elements into clamping contact with the other of said elements.

3. The combination with a bracket provided with a divided lug and with a socket surrounding said lug, of means adapted to fit over said lug and to be seated in said socket, and means for spreading said lug so as to clamp said bracket into permanent engagement with said member.

4. The combination with an end rail of a spring-bottom, of a side rail, a bracket secured to one of said members and adapted to engage the other of said members, said bracket being provided with a divided lug, over which one of said members is adapted to fit, and with a socket surrounding said lug and arranged to receive the end of one of said members, and means for spreading said lug so asto lock the parts together.

5. The combination with an end rail, of a bracket secured thereto, said bracket being provided with a divided lug and with a socket surrounding said lug, a tubular side rail adapted to fit over said lug and into said socket, and means for spreading said lug so as to secure said side rail to said bracket.

6. Asa new article of manufacture, a corner-casting comprising a body portion adapted to be secured to one rail of a bed-frame and provided with an integral divided lug constructed and arranged to be inserted in the end of another rail of a bed-frame and to be expanded therein, and a flange surrounding said divided lug so as to provide a socket arranged to receive the end of the rail within which said lug may be inserted.

- 7 As a new article of manufacture, a corner-bracket for a bed-frame, comprising a body portion, and an integral divided lug eX- tending at right angles thereto, said lug being arranged and constructed to be inserted within one end of a hollow rail and to be expanded therein.
