ALBERT G. ANDERSON, OF BOYD, MINNESOTA.
BED-SPRIN Gr I-IOIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filedpSeptember 16, 1910. Serial No. 582,352.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT C. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyd, in the county of Lao qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for raising bed springs whereby the house-keeper may sweep or mop beneath the bed.
The object of the invention is the provision of a portable device which may be readily attached to any wooden or iron bed for raising the springs thereof upon one side and holding them in such position until it is desired to lower them.
Further objects of the invention will ap pear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a bed showing the application of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a similar device for application on metallic beds. Fig. 3 is I a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1 in folded position. Fig. 4c is a longitudinal sectional View of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 8, 1 represents a slat of suitable material which is adapted to be placed upon a bed in the manner of the ordinary wood slats now in use and is provided with a substantially V-shaped opening 2 extending from its center toward one end. Pivoted at one end to the opposite side walls 3 and 4 of the opening 2 are raising levers 5 and 6 which are connected together at their outer ends and have pivotally secured between them the intermediate lever 7. A suitable bolt 8 extends acrossthe outer end of the members 5 and 6 and separates them so as to permit the lever 7 to rotate. The lever 7 is provided with a notch 9 intermediate its ends which is adapted to engage the bolt 8 thereof so as to limit the movement of the lever. The pivot bolt which connects the free ends of the members 5 and 6 is directly in a transverse center of these members and the bolt 8 which limits the movement of the lever 7 is slightly offset from the transverse center so that when the lever 7 is thrown around to full open position, a locking joint is formed.
The outer end of the lever 7 may be suitably connected to the mattress frame so that when the same is raised upon one side, the levers 5, 6 and 7 will operate in the manner of a toggle joint and when locked in extended position will effectively hold the mattress and frame in elevated position as shown. In Figs. 2 and l, the slot is preferably constructed of a flat bar of metal 10 having both ends bent downwardly into retaining flanges l1 and 12, the latter of which is provided with a set screw 13 passing therethrough so that the bar may be clamped upon the sides of the bed as shown. The levers 5, 6 and 7 are mounted in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and at the opposite end of the bar a projecting stud 14: is formed on the bar to prevent the mattress frame from slipping off when the opposite side is elevated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A mattress supporting attachment, comprising an apertured bar, having depending flanges at each end thereof to overlap the sides of a bed, a set screw carried by one flange and adapted to clamp the bar to said bed, a jointed supporting rod lying in said aperture and having one end pivoted to said bar, means to secure the opposite end of said rod to one side of a mattress frame, and a stud carried by said bar contiguous to and at an angle to the other depending flange for preventing the mattress from slipping oli' said bed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT C. ANDERSON.
Witnesses C. S. OnivoLL, W. C. TORGERSEN.
