METAL WHEEL HUB.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1905.

METAL WHEEL-HUB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed May 15, 1905. Serial No. 260,493.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Wheel-Hubs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in metal wheel-hubs, especially such as are used in the wheels of baby-carriages and go-carts; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of ametal wheelhub embodying my improvements. a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on a plane contiguous to the outer spokes; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
My improved wheel-hub has an axle-thimble 1, a cylindrical box 2, and heads 3 In the ends of the cylindrical box are longitudinal notches 4:, arranged in pairs and adapted to receive the inner portions of the spokerods 5, which are made from Wire of suitable size. The said spoke-rods are made in pairs, each bent from a single piece of wire or rod, the inner connecting portion 601 which lies within and bears against the inner side of the box 2, the spoke members 7 being disposed in the notches 4 at the ends of the box.
The heads 3 are made of sheet metal, are stamped in shape, and are formed With collars or flanges-8 to receive and bear on the ends of the box, and are further provided with central openings 9, through which the thimble 1 extends. The said heads close against the ends of the cylindrical box, and their collars or flanges 8 bear against the outer side of the inner end portions of the spoke-rods, so that the spoke-rods are held at the inner ends of the notches 4. The
outer head is formed with cars 10, which are Fig. 2 is struck up therefrom and which engage the outer edge of a cap and secure said cap in place, thereby providing a finish for the outer end of the head.
A metal hub thus constructed is exceedingly strong and durable, is very cheap and simple, and-the parts thereof may be readily disassembled to facilitate repairs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wheel-hub comprising a box having outwardly-opening notches at its ends, heads having collars or flanges to engage the outer side of the box, at the ends thereof, and close said ends and the outer portionsof said notches,
said heads having central openings, athimble extending through said box and the openings in the heads and connecting the heads together, and pairs of spokes, each pair bent from a single wire and having a connecting portion 6 at their inner ends, said spokes having their inner portions in said notches and their inner connecting portions 6 disposed transversely in and bearing against theinner side of said box, substantially as described.
2. A wheel-hub comprising a box having notches at its ends, heads having collars or flanges to engage the ends of the box and close the outer portions of said notches, a thimble extending through said box and heads, and connecting the latter together, and pairs of spokes having their inner ends connected together, said spokes having their inner portions in said notches and their inner connecting portions on the inner side of the said box, one of said heads having lugs on its outer side and a cap on said head engaged and secured thereto by said lugs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit-
