To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. FELDMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cole Camp, in the county of Benton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Spokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates more particularly to the construction of the spokes of vehiclewheels; and my obj ect is to produce a more simple, cheap, and durable device for preventing the spokes and felly of a wheel from wearing out than has hitherto been in Vogue.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wheel provided with my .improved spokes; Fig. 2, a side elevation in cross-section of a portion of the wheel, showing one spoke and part of the felly; and Figs. 3 and 4, detail views of the spoke proper and the thimble or sleeve for the same.
' In the drawings, the reference-letter A indicates the spoko proper, whichv is made of Wood and secured in the hub of the wheel in the usual manner. This spoke consists of va body portion a, which is of the usual diameter and is about two-thirds the length of the entire spoke, and a reduced portion or core b, extending from the shoulder a' to the outer end of the spoke, its outer extremity being provided with a screw-threaded perforation b', for the purpose hereinafter explained. A metallic thimble or sleeve Bis arranged to fit over this core Z), and consists of a hollow cylindrcal piece of metal having a closed outer head c, provided with a screw-threaded aperture c' in alignment with the perforation b' in the end of the core Z). The inner end of this thimble fits snugly against the shoulder a' of the spoke proper, and near its outer extremity an annular shoulder or flange cl is formed.
The felly C is provided with a perforation e, of the same diameter as the thimble B, so that the outer end f of the same will fit within said perforation. a length nearly equal to the width of the felly, and when fitted in the same the shoulder (l comes squarely against its inner surface.
The screw g, which secures the tire G, enters the screw-threaded aperture c' in the outer end of the thimble B, and also the perforation b' in the end of the spoke, so that these parts are securely held together, and the necessity of having bolts or the like between the spokes is obviated.
A further advantage of my invention is that the bursting of the felly caused by the swelling of the spoko is overcome by the' use of my metallic sleeve, and many other advantages might be enumerated, which, however, will be apparent.
It is evident that slight changes which might suggest themselves to one killed in the art could be resorted .to without departing from the spirit and scope of ,my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vehicle-wheel, the combination of a spoke proper having a reduced portion or core, a metallic sleeve fitting over said core and in the felly of the wheel, and a tire secured to said core, substantially as described.
2. In a vehicle-Wheel, the combination of a spoke proper having a reduced portion 01' core, a metallic thimble or sleeve fitting over said core and arranged to enter the felly of the wheel, a shoulder on said thimble fitting against said felly, and la tire secured to said thimble and said core, substantially as described.
3. In a vehicle-wheel, the combination of a spoke proper having a reduced portion or core provided with an aperture in its outer end, a metallic thimble fitting over said core and having a perforation in its head registering With the aperture in said core, a felly having a perforation in which the outer end This outer portion f has of said thilnble fits, an annulzu' shouldel' 011 said thimble fitting against the inner surface of said felly, and a tire secured to the wheel by a screw 01' its equivalent, which enters the perfora-tion in the thimble-head, and also that in the core, in the 11121111181' and for the purpose deseribed.
