Description
" PATENTBD DEC. 19, 1905.
' S. R. GRAVES.
JAR CLAMP.
SAMUEL R. GRAVES, OF SEVILLE, OHIO.
JAR-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 253,687-
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. GRAvEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seville, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. My invention is a jar-clamp for holding fruit and vegetable jars while the covers of the same are being screwed thereto or unscrewed therefrom and'it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangements of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective v1ew of a jar-clamp embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
The base 1 may be made of wood or any other suitable material, is of suitable size and shape, and is adapted to be secured on a table or other support by means of screws or other suitable devices. At one end of the base, on its upper side, is a shoulder 2, which forms a rigid jaw, the'same being curved on its inner I side, as at 3, to adapt it to fit against one side of a canning or reserving jar and said curved inner side 0 the jaw bein covered by a piece of suitable flexible or yie dable material 4. At the end of the base, opposite the shoulder or jaw, is a vertical longitudinal slot 5, with which communicates a longitudinal bore 6, in which is a screw 7, which is longitudinally movable therein and which is operated by means of a winged nut 8. A
ner end of the screw is upturned, as at 10, and
on the same is pivoted a jaw or shoe 11, which may be either of the form'here shown -or of any other suitable form and which is movable on the upper side of the base by means of the screw. Said aw 11 has its inner side formed on a rentrant curve and covered with a piece of cushioning material 12.
The operation of my invention is as follows: By adjusting the screw by means of the nut the jaw 11 may be moved toward or from the fixed jaw or shoulder 2. The base of the can or jar is placed on the base 1, and the screw is operated to cause the can or jar to be clamped between the jaw 2 and the jaw 11, thereby holding the can or jar while the cover thereof is being applied thereto or removed therefrom. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I A clamp of the class described, comprising a base having a fixed jaw, an adjusting-screw movable longitudinally in the base and having its inner end upturned and projecting above the base, a shoe or jaw pivoted on the upturned end of the screw, and a nut on the latter coacting with the base to adjust the screw and the jaw carried thereby.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL R. GRAVES. Witnesses J. T. GRAVES, FRANK HEATH.
