MACHINE FOR SHARPENING SHE ARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,046, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed October 18, 1883. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAS. K. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Sharpening Shears, Scissors, and other Cutting-Instruments with like beveled edge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for sharpening shears, scissors, and other cutting-instruments to the blades of which it is desired to give a bevel; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my machine. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of my clamp.
The base or supporting-bed A is provided near one end with the upright e, which is provided or formed at, or near its upper end with a file-guide, 6, made preferably in the eye or ring form shown most clearly in Fig. 1. Near the opposite end of the base A, I form through it avertical opening, over which I secure the tubular socket 0, made preferably as shown, and provided with a set-screw, (7, turned through a threaded opening, and having its point capable of being turned into the standard-opening and against the standard, whereby the latter may be held at any desired point of vertical adjustment. This standard I) has its lower end passed through the socket and base, and may be adjusted up or down, as desired, and held at the proper point by set-screw d.
On the upper end of the standard Isecure or form the long jaw a, having its inner face made flat, so the flat face of the blade will rest solidly against it, and this arm has two or more rest-lugs, a, extending outwardfrom itslower edge, and adapted to rest close under and against the lower side of the blade.
The standard, close to the jaw a, has formed transversely through it an opening, a, for the passage of the shank or arm of the short jaw D. This jaw D is rested near its ends on the lugs a, and has a threaded shank or stem, (1, passed through opening a.
A nut, (1*, turns on the outer end of the shank d and against the long jaw, clamping said parts toward each other and firmly on the interposed blade, as shown in Fig. 2.
The short jawis preferably concaved slightly on its inner face,to fit the back or rib of a shears blade. The file F has its point passed and movable through the guide 6, and is preferably formed with an oil-hone, f, on one and an abiading-face, f, on its other side, and with a suitable handle, f, as shown. The point or end extended through the ring or guide 0 is preferably made of highly-polished steel, so that the file may be reciprocated easily, as desired, in operation.
In operation the tile is passed rapidly to and fro over the blade to be sharpened with a sliding motion from point to heel, thus producing a uniformly sharp edge, at the same time keeping the bevel in perfect manner. By adjusting the standard, up or down the angle of the bevel may be varied at will.
It is manifest that equally good results would be had if the part 6 were made adjustable instead of I), as shown and before described.
My invention is simple and efficient to the desired end, can be cheaply made, and is not likely to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of base or support, an upright, e, formed with a suitable file-guide, and the standard I), provided with a' bladeelamping attachment, one of said parts 6 I) being adjustable vertically, whereby the angle of operation may be varied, substantially as set forth.
2. The hereindescribed blade-sharpening machine, consisting of the bed or support, the upright provided with an eye or file guide, the standard provided at its upper end with bladeclamping devices, and having its lower end extended through the base, and the clamp-screw binding against said standard, whereby the same may be held at any desired point of vertical adjustment, and the file, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the standard formed ICO with jaw a, having lugs a extended from its lower edge, and provided with a transverse opening, a", and the jaw D, provided with threaded arm (1, inserted through opening a", and the clamping-nut turned on said threaded arm, substantially as set forth.
