Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application tiled May 26,1905. Serial No. 262,332.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, JOSEPH A.ARNoLD,a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle-Stoppers particularly adapted for use upon bottles orjars containing perishable merchandise or which would be subject to fermentation; and one object of my invention is the provision of a stopper which can be applied With ease to the neck of the bottle or jar, which will make an absolutely air-tight joint When closed, which cannot possibly become accidentally released, but which will open instantly and automatically When the fastening is released.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a spring-actuated or automatic stopper which will preserve the contents of the bottle under all conditions, which can be instantly attached and which will be of such simple and inexpensive construction as to render the stopper efiicient and practical in every particular.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a bottle-stopper embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my stopper in position for use, a suflicient portion of the bottle being shown to illustrate the application of my stopper; and Fig. 2 represents a vertical central sectional view of the complete device.
In the drawings the letter A designates the neck of the bottle, the mouth having the usual flange B, and encircling the neck of the bottle or jar below the mouth-flange is the band or collar O, provided at the rear or at one side with the extension D, from which rises the pair of vertical lugs or ears E, in which is secured the pin or stud E, and directly opposite to the said extension the band or collar is formed With the iat upward-extending springarm G, having at its free end a catch H, and the band is clamped upon the neck of the bottle by means of the lip J, which engages one of the series of openings K for securing the band firmly upon the neck of the bottle or jar. From this construction it will be observed that the band or collar is secured neatly upon the neck of the bottle or jar, and preferably the extension With vertical ears and the spring-arm are stamped or formed from a single piece or blank.
The stopper or cap L is formed with the annular recess or seat M, in which ts the Washer or packing disk N, and at one side the stopper carries the depending plate O, provided with a catch P, adapted to be engaged by the catch on the spring-arm of the band or collar, and opposite the said plate the collar carries the plate Q, formed With the sleeve R, fitting on the pin or stud, and around said pin or stud is placed the coiled spring S, having one terminal T engaging the plate and the other terminal T bearing upon the extension of the collar, this spring exerting its tension to hold the cap from Working loose When closed and automatically opening the stopper when the catch is released by pressure of the finger on said catch.
It is evident that I provide a stopper which when closed provides an air-tight joint, which can be instantly and automatically opened by simply pressing on the spring-arm and which can be applied at a small expense and will prove thoroughly eflicient and practical.
I have shown the collar or band which surrounds the neck of the bottle or jar as having its ends free'and adapted to be secured when in position upon the neck; but it will be understood that this band or collar may be a closed construction or formed in a single piece, or it may be split and the ends connected in any possible manner as found most desirable and convenient.
I claim` 1. In a stopper, the combination of an adjustable band or collar, a spring.- catch arranged on one side of the band or collar, an extension on the other side of the band or collar formed With a pair of ears, a stopper carrying a Washer pivoted or hinged between said ears and adapted to be secured when closed by the spring-catch, and a spring secured between the ears for opening the stopper upon release of the spring-catch.
2. In a stopper, the combination of a split band or collar formed With a spring-arm having a catch and with a pair of ears located opposite said spring-arm, a pin fitting in said ears, a stopper carrying a packing or Washer and hinged to said pin, a spring on the pin for opening the stopper automatically, and a catch carried by the stopper for engaging the catch of the band to secure the stopper Whenl closed.
3. In astopper, the combination of the cap,
IIO
the packing disk or Washer fitting in said cap, the hinge on one side of the cap, the springcatch on the cap opposite said hinge, and the band having ears and a pin secured in said ears forming a journal for the hinge and the springarrn formed with a Catch to cooperate with the catch on the stopper to look the stopper when Closed and the spring secured to the journal and adapted to open the stopper' upon release of the spring-Catch. IO
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
