Be it known that we, JOHN PORTER and FREDERICK C. h TAYER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Frostburg, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improvement in bottle-closures; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle-neck with our improved devices in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof with the fastening devices in position to hold the stopper in the bottle. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the fastening devices released and the frangible lockinghook at one side of the neck of the bottle broken away, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the fastening devices removed from the bottle-neck.

By the invention it is sought to provide means for holding the bottle-closure in the neck of the bottle, at the ends of which are provided means for detachable engagement with the bottle-neck, so the fastening devices may be applied to and removed from the neck of the bottle.

In the construction shown the closure may be effected by means of an ordinary stopper A, fitted to the mouth of the bottle-neck B below the cross-bar C of the sealing-frame D, the latter being of a special construction, as

- will be hereinafter more fully described.

The bottle-neck B is provided at one side near its mouth with a seat-hook E, with which one end of the sealing-frame D at F may be detachably engaged in the use of the invention, as shown in Fig. 2. At the opposite side of the neck B from the seat-hook E is provided the frangible locking-hook G, which curves downwardly toward its outer end, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The hook G projects sufliciently from the neck of the bottle to form a seat beneath which the crank projections of the locking-bar, presently described, may be engaged when the parts are applied as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The sealing-frame D is adapted for application to and ready detachment entirely from the neck of the bottle, being to this end provided at one end with means for detachable engagement with the seat-hook E and at its other end with means for detachable engagement with the frangible locking-hook G, so the frame can be entirely removed from the neck when desired. At its end opposite the cross bar or loop F the bail-handle H is pivoted at I to the body portion of the frame D, and immediately below the said pivot I the bail-handle H is provided with bearings H, in which journal the locking-bar J, having a handle J, by which it may be rocked, and provided at its middle portion with crank projections K and K, the latter being longer than the former and adapted to bear in the locked position of the sealing-frame beneath the base of the hook, while the crank projection K bears immediately beneath the point of the frangible hook G, the relation of the parts being such, as shown in Fig. 2, that when the parts are locked they cannot be released without breaking off the frangible hook G, as any upward movement of the bailhandle H or of the handle J of the lockingbar would cause the crank projection K to press the free end of the frangible lockinghook upwardly and break it off so that the device could not again be used for sealing a bottle. By the improvement, therefore, there is provided a non-refillable bottle or one which when once filled and sealed cannot be opened without bearing positive evidence of such opening and cannot again be filled and sealed in the original manner.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination substantially as herein described of a bottle-neck provided at one side with a seat-hook and on its other side with a projecting frangible locking-hook for engagement by a locking-bar, a sealing-frame having a cross bar or loop at one end engaged with the seat-hook and extending thence over the end of the bottle-neck, a bail-handle pivoted at its ends to the ends of the body portion of the sealing-frame, and a locking-bar pivoted to the bail-handle and having crank projections to engage beneath the point of the frangible hook and below the base of the said hook all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of a bottleneck provided at one side with a projecting frangible same when released, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a bottle-neck having a frangible hook, of a sealing-frame, a bail-handle pivoted to the sealing-frame and a locking-bar having crank projections to engage with the frangible hook and a lockingbar carried by the bail-handle, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of a bottle-neck having an exterior frangible portion and a fastening device therefor, provided at one end with means for detachable engagement with the bottle-neck and at its other end with straining means for forcibly actuating the device to sealed position whereby it may be readily applied to and entirely detached from the bottle-neck, the straining means being arranged for engagement with the exterior ment by a locking-bar, of a sealing-frame engaged at one end with the seat-hook and provided at its other end with a bail-handle and with a locking-bar pivoted to the said handle and having crank projections engaging beneath the hook-base and beneath the point of the frangible locking-hook, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination of a bottle-neck having a seat-hook at one side and a frangible locking-hook at its opposite side, a sealingframe engaged at one end with the seat-hook and extending thence over the mouth of the bottle and having a cross-bar for securing the stopper, a bail-handle pivoted to the end of the sealing-frame opposite that engaged with the seat-hook and a locking-bar carried by the bail-handle for engagement with the frangible hook, substantially as set forth.

8. A bottle having an exterior frangible portion, and a sealing-frame having means for engagement with said portion and adapted to break the same when released.
