IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY ooncnnn. 5
Be it known that I, RICHARD Gtmsnnvn, of Rochester, in the county of -Monroe, and State of New York,
' have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a section of my improved attachment applied to the top of a lamp-body.
Figure 2, a perspective view of the device detached.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My invention consists in a. removable frame-for holding the chimney and its attachments to the lamp, and provided with a glass bottom-plate, for allowing a free and unobstructed passage of light downward, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a portion of the lamp-body, and B its collar, with screw-top p. To the collar is secured a rim, 0, which is provided with bayonet-slotsa a, in which rest the bearings b b of frame D. The rim 0 has also numerous perforations c c c, for admitting "a draught of'air to the blaze.
The frame D is made of wire, ,or equivalent, having circular rims or guards d 01, one above the other, (for holding and steadying the chimney R) which are connected by vertical standards g g with the bearings 12 b that serve to support the glass bottom-plate G. The plate G has an opening in the centre,in which sets the. loose cone-H, the same being provided at its lower edge with notches ii, that rest over the bearings 12 b of frame D, to h ld the cone in position, or arranged in any similar manner. I
The great advantage of this device is, that by making the frame D for holding thechimney of open work, and the bottom of glass, the light will have a free and unobstructed passage downward, as well as outward, on all sides, and the least possible shade will be produced by the lamp itself.
In common lamps, the cap or hearing for sustaining the chimney is opaque, and projects so far as to cas a shadow'for a considerable distance around, which is a source of great annoyance, and renders-them very objectionable; besides, there is loss of light. By allowing the chimney a broad hearing at its-base, and being held securely by the guards d d, it cannot easily tip over and get broken. And I economize all the light that is produ ed, there being no loss.
In addition to the above, the arrangementof the removable cone H, and the supporting-rim G, in connection with the frame, enables the parts to all be readily applied or removed.
What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the open frame D and transparent bottom-plate G, when arranged in connection with the removable cone H and fixed rim 0, the whole as herein set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereuntosigned my'name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
