TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

130 it known that I, GEORGE NEILsoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to theaccompanying drawings.

My invention refers to that class of burners in which the deflector is elevated some distance above ,the chimneyrest and base, so as to allow light to pass out from beneath the deflector; and its object is to adapts burner of this description to be used either with or without a larger glass or globe surrounding the ordinary chimney. To this end my invention consists essentially of the combination, with a burner in which the base or chimney-rest is combined with an elevated deflector, as specified, of a globe-frame or supporter adjustable upon or permanently united with the said chimney-rest, as hereinafter described. By thus adapting the burner to receive a globe, I am enabled, with little or no trouble and expense, to produce a lamp which will give a mellow and soft light, and which may be made to present a highly ornamentalappearance.

i To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I. will now proceed to describe the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents an elevation of a lamp-burner from which the globe-frame has been removed. Figure 2 is a vertical central section of the same; and Figure 3 is a top view of the globe-frame detached. The burner I have represented in illustration of my invention is one for which Letters Patent of the United States have been recently granted me, and it needs, therefore, no detailed description at this time. It belongs to that class of burners hercinbefore mentioned, in which the base or chimney-rest a is combined with an elevated deflect-or, b. The chimney, when placed upon the burner, rests on the-chimncy-scat a, while it is supported by the springs c and the'elastic rim of the deflector-rest or frame d. In order to combine with this burner a frame,

upon which a globe can be, supported, I form upon the periphery of the chimney-rest, a seat,f, which canbe 7 either made separately, and then attached to the chimney-rcsh or struck up in one piece with the latter from the sheet metal of which they both are composed. The seatfpthus' formed, has a slightly bevelled surface, so that when the detachable or adjustable'globe-frame h is pressed down on the same, the two will be wedged and held firmly together Aflange or shoulder, 2', which projects laterally from the lower end of the seatf, prevents the globe-frame from slipping too far down upon the seat. This globe-frame or holder h, as shown in the drawings, has an annular form, and consists of two parts, t he globe-rest 70, upon which the base of the globe is held,

and a hoop or collar, Z, which is of such size as to fit closely around the seatf. The frame, however, may be constructed in any other suitable manner.

I would further remark that the globe-frame can be either detachable or united solidly with the chimueyrest, of which it will in such case, form part, and it may be either struck up in one piece with the chimney-rest, or made separately, and afterwards secured in proper position upon the chimney-rest.

Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I The combination, with a lamp-burner in which the base or chimney-rest is combincd with an elevated deflector,

as herein specified, of a globe-frame, adjustable upon orperm-anently united with the said chimney-rest, substautially in the manner and for the purposes shown and set forth.
