BOLT-HEADING ATTACHMENT FOR VIISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed June 1,1905. Serial No. 268,259.
To all who/1t (It may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residingat Butler, in the county of Choctaw and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Heading Attachments for Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the. letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for vises; and it relates more particularly to the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and efficient attachment for that class of Vises which are commonly employed by blacksmiths, the device being adapted for use in holding bolts while the same are being headed.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel features of construction and of peculiar combinations, arrangements, and adaptations of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment complete and in operative position, the jaws of the vise, to which the device is attached, being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the device, and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the inner face of one of the sections of the device.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letters, A represents the complete device, which consists of two blocks of metal B and C, said blocks being identical in form and adapted when attached to the jaws of a vise and when brought into contact by the closing of the vise to form together a substantial rectangular block of metal having a series of openings formed between the meeting faces of the blocks. These openings a being vertically disposed in the meeting faces of the blocks and being adapted to receive bolts to be headed, they may be either round or square, as may be adapted to receive either round or square bolts, as will be at once understood. The blocks or sections A B of the device are upon their outer faces to be provided with recesses of such size and form as to adapt them to be fitted over the'opposite jaws of the vise and are adapted to be held securely in position upon the said jaws by set-screws (Z d, which screws are passed through screw-threaded openings formed in the ends of the blocks, and the ends of the screws are adapted to bear against the ends of the vise, as shown.
In use the bolts to be headed are placed within the vertical openings to (L, which are formed in the meeting edges of the blocks A and B, and in the closing of the vise the bolts are securely held in the said openings, and the upper ends of the bolts which protrude above the upper ends of the openings, may be headed in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
A detachable bolt-heading die for Vises, comprising a block, having a die edge and recessed upon the rear face thereof, adapted to receive a jaw of a vise, said recessed portion having a shoulder bearing against the under edge of the jaw, and the top of the recessed portion being concaved and adapted to rest upon the convexed surface of the jaw of the vise, and a set-screw carried at one end of said block, and having its end extending into said recess and designed to frictionally engage the end of thejaw of the vise, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. COOK. Witnesses:
R. W. DU Bosn, G. A. TURNER.
