CLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLLA I-I. SHARON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stotts City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in jacks for general use and more particularly in jacks of the class known as oil well jacks, the object of the invention being to provide a jack of this character for use in screwing up and unscrewing well casings and other oil .well tool joints, although it should be understood that the invention is by-no means limited to this use.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel clamping means adapted for use in connection'with the jack.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of etliciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the jack. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a sectional view on the line 1- 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the track bar which is provided with a plurality of rack teeth 2, and the ends of said bar are secured tothe transverse end pieces 3 and 4 respectivelywhich are rigidly secured to the floor by means of the screws 5. Formed integral with the cross piece 4 is the upwardly extending post 6 which is provided with a cutaway portion 7 to form a shoulder 8. Slidably mounted upon the rack bar 1 is the carrier frame 9 having the jacking lever or handle 10 pivotally secured to the carrier at 11. A pawl 12 is pivotally secured at one end to the lever 10 and having its other end adapted to engage the teeth 2 on the bar 1 as the lever 10 1s reciprocated to force the carrier 9 along the track bar toward the post 6. A second pawl 13 is pivotally secured to the carrier 9 and is adapted to engage the rack teeth 2 to prevent backward movement of the carrier upon the bar. The carrier 9 is provided at its front end with an abutment 1 1 which corresponds with the cut away portion of the post 7.
For use in connection with the above described jack I have provided novel clamping means which comprise the spaced clamping arms 15 each having one of its ends bent inwardly toward the other arm as shown at 16 and its extreme end looped to form an eye 17 which is pivotally secured between the plates 18. Upon the arms 15 are the oppositely disposed stationary jaws 19 and the oppositely disposed movable jaws 20. The movable jaws 20 are provided with tapering upper edges and are cut away at their large ends to form spaced cars 21 between which are pivotally mounted the pawls 22 adapted to engage the rack teeth 23 formed upon the edges of the arms 15. Thus it will be seen that the movable jaws 20 can be quickly and easily adjusted for any sized casing or oil well tools.
In order to hold the casing or any other tool, to which the clamping member is applied, against turning or vertical movement, one of the stationary jaws 19 is provided upon its inner tapering face 24 with the vertically disposed corrugations 25 and the other stationary jaw is provided upon its inner tapering face 2 1 with the longitudinal corrugations 26. The movable jaw 20, which is mounted upon the same arm with the stationary jaw provided on its inner face with vertical corrugations, is provided on its inner tapering face with longitudinal corrugations 27, and the other movable jaw, which is mounted upon the same arm with the stationary jaw provided with longitudinal corrugations is provided upon its inner tapering face with the vertical corrugations 28. Thus it will be seen that when the jaws 19 and 20 are securely clamped to the casing or other oil well tools the same will be held securely against any turning or vertical. movement.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings it will be readily seen that the movable jaws 20 may be quickly and readily adjusted upon the arms 15. In the operation of my device the carrier. 9 is arranged at the end of the track bar op-po be resorted to for site the post 6 and the free ends of the arms 15 are placed between the abutment 14 and the cut away portion 7 so that when the carrier 9 is moved toward the post 6 by means of the lever 10, the jaws 19 and 20 will be brought into clamping engagement with the casing or other oil well tools to securely hold them.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
What I claim is a 1. A clamping member comprising spaced arms having one pair of their ends bent inwardly and looped to form eyes, plates arranged upon each side of said eyes between which the eyes are pivotally secured, and
stationary and movable jaws mounted upon said arms whereby the clamping 'member may be easily applied to casings or tools of various sizes.
2. A clamping member comprising spaced arms each having one of its ends bent inwardly toward the other arm, and its extreme end looped to form an eye, plates arranged upon each side of said eyes, pivot pins pivotally securing the eyes between the plates, a stationary and a movable jaw mounted upon one of said arms, said jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with longitudinal and vertical corrugations, a stationary and a movable jaw mounted upon the other of said arms, said second jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with vertical and longitudinal corrugations.
3. A clamping member including spaced arms having one pair of their ends pivotally connected and stationary and movable jaws mounted upon said arms whereby various sizes of casings or tools may be securely held.
4. A clamping member including spaced arms having one pair of their ends bent inwardly and looped to form eyes, means for pivotally connecting said eyes, and stationary and movable jaws mounted upon said arms whereby the clamping members may be easily applied to casings or tools of various sizes.
5. A clamping member including spaced arms having one pair of their ends pivotally connected and stationary and movable jaws mounted upon said arms, said movable jaws being adjustably mounted upon said arms and means for holding said jaws in an adjusted position whereby various sizes of casings or tools may be securely held.
6. A clamping member including spaced arms having one pair of their ends pivotally connected, a stationary and a movable jaw mounted upon one of said arms, said jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with longitudinal and vertical corrugations, a stationary and a movable jaw mounted upon the other of said arms and said second jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with vertical and longitudinal corrugations.
7 A clamping member comprising spaced arms having one pair of their ends pivotally connected, stationary and movable jaws mounted upon said arms, pawls pivotally secured to said movable jaws, and rack teeth formed on one end of the longitudinal edges of the arms and adapted to be engaged by the pawls to hold the movable jaws in an adjusted position whereby the clamping members may be easily applied to casings or tools of various sizes.
8. A clamping member including spaced arms each having one of its ends bent in wardly toward the other arm, and its eX- treme end looped to form an eye, plates arranged upon each side of said eyes, pivot pins pivotally securing the eyes betweenthe plates, a stationary ,and a movable jaw. mounted upon one of said arms, said jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with longitudinal and vertical corrugations, a stationary and a movable jaw mounted upon the other of said arms, said second jaws being provided respectively upon their inner faces with vertical and longitudinal corrugations, pawls pivotally secured to said movable jaws, and rack teeth formed in one of the longitudinal edges of the clamping arms and adapted to be engaged by the pawls to hold the movable jaws in an adjusted position. v In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
