To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that l. AUoUs'rUs Lnrons'rnn Moss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Snndusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and limproved Sanding Device, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
\The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sanding device, more especially designed for use on automobiles and like vehicles and arranged to permit the chauffeur to throw the sanding device quickly into action to sprinkle the road-bed with sand whenever required with a view to prevent the vehicle-wheels from slipping, especially when the road-bed is wet or otherwise rendered slippery.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the views.

Up the frame or body it of the automobile or other vehicle is secured a sand-boa lit for containing sand adapted to pass from the sand box through a teed-chute (J onto the top of a horiaontallydisposed revolving distributor D inthe t'orrn ot a disk having radially/disposed guide-ribs D to cause the sand to be forced from the disk by centrifugal iorce the ribs l) guiding the sand in its discharge from the disk. so that the sand is scattered over the road-bed mainly infront and in bach oi the a driven wheels A of the vehicle to allow for- I ward or backward running of the vehicle on a wet or otherwise slippery road- -bed it being understood that the scattered sand provides suficient friction on the slippery road-bed to prevent the wheels from slipping. in order to prevent the sand from moving upward on the distributor 1D, the top thereof is covered by a disk (3', fixed on the lower end of the teed-chute O, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. l
The guide-ribs l) are preferably disposed radially and maybe of the same or alternately of different lengths, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 4. lly having the guide-ribs alternately of different lengths the sand is scattered over a greater area on the road-bed to thoroughly sand the same for the wheels A to obtain a good hold with a view to prevent the wheels from slip ping no matter in what direction the automobile is propelled at the time.
The disk of the distributor l) is secured on a centrally-disposed shai't l)". extending up ward through the feed-chute (l and journaled at its upper end in the top of the chute, which forms a fixture of the sand-box B, but may be otherwise arranged. On the upper end of the shaft D is secured a bevel gear-wheel E, in mesh with a bevel gear-wheel l5, fastened on one end of the shaft ll of a iced-screw l mountedto turn in the bottom of the sand box it. so as to feed the sand from the sand-- boa H positively into the chute (J, from which the sand drops by its own'gravity centrally onto the disk of thegdiatribnter l) to be can pelled from the latter by centrifugal force when the dish Dis rotated.

The sprocket wheel bl is adapted to be connected by a clutch l of any approved construction with the drive-shaft l-l, so that when the latter is rotated and the vehicle is propelled forward then the said clutch ll rotates with the drive-shaft ill and turns the sprocket wheel U to rotate the feed-screw il which in turn rotates the dish: D by the gearing above described. hierinally however, the clutch llis out of engage ment with the sprocket-wheel ti and is adapt-- ed to be thrown into engagement with the said sprocket-wheel whenever it is desired to sand the roadway, as previously explained. For the purpose mentioned the clutch l is en gaged by a shii tingdever d, connected by a link lit with a lever L having a foot piece L within reach oi the i'oot otthe chaufleur or other operator, the lever L being pressed on by a springhl to normally hold the same in a rearward position and the clutch ll out of en gagernent with the sprocket-wheel Gr. .A. As soon as the operator releases the pressure on the foot-pieceL the clutch I is thrown out of mesh with the sprocket-wheel G so that the rotary motion of the latter, and consequently that of the feed-screw F and the distributer D, ceases.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, can be readily applied to automobiles and similar vehicles as new constructed, and is completely under the control of the chauffeur to permit the latter to actuate the device with a view to sand the road-bed whenever it is desired to do so.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sanding device for automobiles and like vehicles, provided with a revolu ble distributer connected with a sand-supply and adapted to scatter the sand on the road-bed by centrifugal orce.

A sanding device for automobiles and like vehicles, provided with arevoluble distributer connected with a sand-supply and adapted to scatter the sand on the road-bed by centrifugal force, the distributer being disposed horizontallg and provided with ribs for scattering the san 3. 4. Asanding device for automobiles and like vehicles, comprising a sand-box, a horizontally-disposed revoluble distributeradapted to scatter the sand on the road-bed by centrifugal force, a feeding device for feeding the sand from the said sand-box to the center of the said distributer, a driving means for rotating the distributer from a driven part of the vehicle, and a stopping and starting device under the control of the operator, for connecting and disconnecting the said driving means and the said distributer.
5. A sanding device for automobiles and like vehicles, comprising a sand-box, a revoluble disk disposed horizontally and having ribs on its upper face, and a feed-chute connected with the said sand-box and discharging onto the said upper face of the disk.
6. A sanding device for automobiles and like vehicles, comprising a sand-box, a revoluble disk disposed horizontally and having ribs on its upper face, the said ribs being alternately of difierent length, .anda feed-chute connected with the said sand-box and discharging onto the said upper face of the disk.
7. Asandingdeviceforautomobilesandlike vehicles, comprising a sandbox, a feed-chute leading therefrom,a horizontally-disposed distributing-disk having guide-ribs on its upper face and on which discharges the said feedchute, a feed-screw in the said sand-box, for
feeding the sand from the said sand-box into the said feed-chute, a gearing for rotating the said feed-screw and disk in unison, and a driving device for driving the said feed-screw from a driven part of the vehicle.
8. A sandingdevice for automobiles and like vehicles, comprising a sand-box, a feed-chute leading therefrom, a horizontally-d isposed distributing-disk having guide-ribs on its upper face and on which discharges the said feedchute, a feed-screw in the said sand-box, for feedingthe sand from the said sand-box'into the said feed-chute, a gearing for rotating the said feed-screw and disk in unison, a driving device for driving the said feed-screw from a driven part of the vehicle, and manually-controlled means for throwing the feed-screw in or out of gear with the-said driven part. v
