Match Safe.f
No. 79,353. Patented June 30, 1868.
N. PEI'ERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRIPNER, WASHINGTON. D C.
ni'teit titties iQat-mt 'ffir Letters Patent No. 79,353, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATGH-SAFES.
fttt 5211231111: rtfrrrtt it in flgrtt; $211M finial transiting part of the time TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALFRED Herr, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new aud useful Improvement in Match-Safe and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will'enable those skilled in the-art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to so form a receptacle or bot: for keeping matches, and conveniences for lighting the same, that the matches shall be kept dry, and not exposed to moisture from the atmosphere, and so, that facilities shall always be at hand for lighting thefmatch.
And the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described.
Figure 1 represents a side view. of the match-safe, with the box which holds the matches open, as when a match is to be taken out. I i
Figure 2 is a view from the top.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The match-safe consists of an outer casing for the match-box, the box itself or receptacle for the matches, and one or more cylinders, which are covered with emery'or sand-paper to form a friction-surface on which to rub the match for igniting it.
A isthe casing for the match-box B. u
The top and bottom pieces of the casing A extend out on each side, soas to support cylinders C, which may be revolved on pivots by a ratchet and pawl,'a s seen in-thedrawing.
D represents ratchet-whcels on the lower ends of the cylinders.
f represents thepawls.
The box B is hinged to arms on the bottom of the case A, as seen at g.
The pawl sj'are attached to the box at their outer ends, as seen at it.
Their inner ends rest on the ratchet-wheelsD.
As the top. of the box B is drawn forward or' opened, as seen in fig. 1, the pawl will be drawn back over one or more teeth of the ratchet, and, when the box drops back into its case, the ratchet-wheels and the cylinders will be turned by the pawls, and a new surface on the cylinders will be presented on which to rub' the matches every-time the box is opened.
The dotted lines indicate the interior of the box, where there may be a partition, :as seen in the drawing, if desired. 1
The back of the box may be weighted or made sufliciently heavy to insure its closing by its own gravity when opened.
These match-safes may be made of cast iron, or of any other suitable material, and of any desired size.
The self-closing box secures the matches from the dampness of the atmosphere, while the cylinders O save the walls of the room from disfigurement, and present a new or'fresh surface to the match at every lighting.
I do not confine myself to the automatic revolving cylinder.
The ratchcts and pawls maybe dispensed with, and the cylinders may be revolved by hand.
These match-safes are designed to be hung upon the wall in the usual manner, and, the top of the case being. a flat surface, may be used as a bracket or shelf on-which to place ornaments or other articles.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A match-safe, formed of the parts A, B, and O, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
