Description

UNITED STATES Patented June 27, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER P. BROWN, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,048, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed November 6, 1903. Serial No. 180,078-
[0 (ll/Z whom it Uta-y concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Composition for ater-proofing Cartons or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a composition for rendering paper cartons or receptacles water and liquid proof.
The object of the invention is to provide a composition which when applied to a paper or pulp carton or receptacle will impregnate and coat the same, so as to render the said carton or receptacle capable of holding any and all liquids and materials containing liquids or ingredients which ordinarily soak through and escape from an ordinary paper receptacle or package.
\Vith this object in view the invention consists in the ingredients combined in a manner hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In compounding the composition which constitutes my invention I employ parafiin-wax, paraflin-oil, Brazilian wax, talc, asbestos, asbestine, powdered chalk, beeswax, bayberrywax, petroleum-oil, ceresin-wax, and white wax. These ingredients are used in the following proportions: eight parts paraflin-wax, one part paraflin-oil, three parts Brazilian wax, six parts talc, two parts asbestos, four parts asbestine, one part powdered chalk, one part beeswax, one part bayberry-wax, one part petroleum-oil, one part ceresin-wax, and one part white wax. These ingredients are placed in a suitable receptacle and heated until the entire mass becomes a homogeneous liquefied composition, and the paper receptacle or carton is immersed in the said composition while heated at its liquefied temperature and is permitted to remain therein a sutficient length of time to become thoroughly impregnated and coated upon the interior and exterior with the said composition.
It will be understood that the ingredients embrace three distinct classes of materials-- namely, wax, oils, and earthy or calcareous material combined with asbestos or some material formed from asbestos. The materials mentioned, however, and in the proportion specified I believe to be the best adapted for carrying out the purpose of my inven tion. It will also be understood that this composition can be used for waterproofing paper in fiat sheets, so that said paper can be used for wrapping or manufacturing purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A composition for rendering paper cartons or receptacles liquid-proof and consisting of paraflin-wax and paratlin-oil, Brazilian wax, talc, powdered asbestos, asbestine, powdered chalk, beeswax,bayberry-wax, petroleum-oil, ceresin-Wax and white wax in the proportions specified.
