REGISTER-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,849, dated May 2, 1905. `Application filed January 15,1904. Serial No. 189,199.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. RoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Innprovement in Register-Hooks, of which the followingis a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication.
My invention relates to register-hooks, and has for its object the provision of an improved register-hook whereby very close and line adjustment of the plates entering into the form may be secured.
By means of my invention the adjacent plates in a form may be very closely approached, making the device of particular' value in such work as label-printing--for example, where it is desired to have little or no trimming of the paper between the labels.
Generally speaking, my invention comprises a support, preferably in the form of a hollow block, a threaded shaft rotatably mounted in the block and provided with a gripping-surface and a register-hook having threaded engagement with the shaft, the register-hook being provided with a recess into which that part of the threaded shaft provided with a gripping-surface may project in order to secure the close adjustment desired.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings,illus trating the preferred embodiments thereof, in which* Figure 1 is a plan view of a chase containing a form. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 enlarged. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the register-hooks. Fig. 4c is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan View of another form of register-hook containing the invention. Fig. Gis a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6, showing the two threaded shafts in section. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a thin wrench desirably used in connection with the device of the invention.

One end of the threaded shaft is provided with a gripping face or head g, that is desirably polygonal 1n contour, being a hexagon in the construction illustrated. This grippingface may be engaged by a suitable wrench, as that indicated in Fig. 8, the wrench being very thin, so that the register-hook may be brought very close to the inner face of the `block adjacent to the gripping-head (l. order that the wrench may have suitable engaging surface and at the same time permit of the close approach of the register-hook `and the inner face of the block next to the gripping-head, the base d is provided with a recess 7a, surrounding the threaded shaft and adapted to receive the gripping-head when the register-hook is moved close to the said head. As the head enters the recess /b less and less of it is offered to the wrench; but the wrench is guided in its application to the head by its engagement with the inner face of the block and the opposing face of the base-hook. By reference to Fig. l it will be observed that the space between the base of the registerhook and the inner surface of the block adjacent to the gripping-head need not be greater than the width of the base of the inclined marginal portion e. The base Z in the form of a block, together with its marginal portion c, is preferably guided in a rectilineal direction by means of two guiding-pins fi, mounted in opposite walls of the block and passing through snugly-fitting apertures in the base of the hook. This arrangement has the advantage of relieving the threaded shaft b of binding' engagement with the base of the hook which might be otherwise occasioned-for example, if a hook should project longitudinally beyond a plate supported thereby. By being IOC) able to limit the space between the base'of the hook and the inner vertical surface of the block adjacent to the gripping-head. to a distance equal to the base of the inclined 'marginal portion e adjacent plates f may be very closely brought together, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 indicate a double registerhook embodying the invention and having the general characteristics pointed out in connection with the construction shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, and similar parts are given similar characters of reference.V
The pin c is common to two alined shafts b, the gripping-heads of which shafts are adjacent the washer or flange t, interposed between the heads. This flange acts as a guide for the wrench, being desirably separately formed from either of the gripping-heads g for convenience of manufacture. The shafts are desirably loosely7 placed upon the pin c. The supporting-rods t' in the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, pass through the bases of two register-hooks instead of one, as indicated in the other views.
It is obvious that changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise constructions show-n; but,
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. Ina device of the class described, the cornbination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having a common axis of rotation, two hooks each having a base in the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited to movement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving the corresponding gripping-head, a ange interposed between the gri-pping-l-ieads for guiding the wrench in its application, a shaft mounted in opposite walls of the hollow block upon which both threaded shafts are rotatably mounted, and supplemental guiding means with which the bases of the said hooks engage, substantially as described.
2. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having a common axis of rotation, two hooks each having a base in the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited to movement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving the corresponding gripping-head, a shaft mounted in opposite wallsI of the hollow block upon which both threaded shafts are rotatably mounted, and' supplemental guiding means with which the bases of the said hooks engage, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having a common axis ofrotation, two hooks each having a base in the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited to movement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving the corresponding gripping-head, a flange interposed between the gripping-heads for guiding the wrench in its application, anda shaft mounted in opposite walls ofA the hollow block upon which both threaded shafts are rotatably mounted, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having a common axis of rotation, two hooks each having a base in. the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited tomovement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving the corresponding gripping-head, and a shaft mounted in opposite walls of the hollow block upon which both threaded shafts are rotatably mounted, substantially as described.
5. In adevice of theclass described, the combination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having a common axis of rotation, two hooks each having a base in the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited to movement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving-the corresponding gripping-head, and a iiange interposed between the gripping-heads for guiding the wrench in its application, substantially as described.
6. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of two threaded shafts having acommon axis of rotation, two hooks. each having a base in the form of a block and each engaging a shaft, the hooks being limited to movement longitudinally of the shafts, each shaft having a gripping-head, the gripping-heads being adjacent to each other, while the base of each hook is provided with a recess for receiving the corresponding gripping-head, substantially as described.
7 In adevice of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of a threaded shaft rotatably mounted therein, a hook having its base in the form of a block provided with threaded engagement with the said shaft and limited to movement longitudinally of the shaft, the shaft having a gripping-head, while the base. of the hook has a recess for receiving the gripping-head, supplemental supporting means for the hook upon which ISO the hook may slide as it is caused to travel upon the shaft, a shaft supported in opposite walls of the hollow block upon which the threaded shaft is rotatably mounted, and two guiding-pins supported in the hollow block and passing through the base of the hook, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of a threaded shaft rotatably mounted therein, a hook having its base in the form of a block provided with threaded engagement with the said shaft and limited to movement longitudinally of the shaft, the shaft having a gripping-head, while the base of the hook has a recess for receiving the gripping-head, a shaft supported in opposite walls of the hollow block upon which the threaded shaft is rotatably mounted, and two guiding-pins supported in the hollow block and passing through the base of the hook, substantially as described.
9. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of a threaded shaft rotatably mounted therein, a hook having its base in the form of a block provided with threaded engagement with the said shaft and limited to movement longitudinally of the shaft, the shaft having a gripping-head, while the base of the hook has a recess for receiving the gripping-head. supplemental supporting means for the hook upon which the hook may slide as it is caused to travel upon the shaft, and a shaft supported in opposite walls of the hollow block upon which the threaded shaft is rotatably mounted, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of a threaded shaft rotatably mounted therein, a hook having its base in the form of a block provided with threaded engagement with the said shaft and limited to movement longitudinally of the shaft, the shaft having a gripping-head,
while the base of the hook has a recess for receiving the gripping-head, and a shaft supported in opposite walls of lthe hollow block upon which the threaded shaft is rotatably mounted, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow block, of a threaded shaft, a hook having as a base a block in threaded engagement with the shaft, and a pin mounted in the walls of the hollow block and passing through the base of the hook, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the class described, the
`combination with a hollow block, of two coaxial shafts independently rotatably mounted in said block and two hooks, said shafts having threaded engagement with the bases of said hooks, substantially as described.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination with a block, of a threaded shaft, a hook in threaded engagement with the shaft, and a pin mounted in said block and passing through said hook, substantially as described.
1K1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular frame containing a pin secured in two sides of the frame, a screw-threaded sleeve mounted on said pin, means for turning said sleeve and a jaw arranged to travel on said sleeve, substantially as described.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination with a square frame, a pin passing through said frame, a sleeve mounted on said pin, means for turnifig said sleeve, a movable jaw, and means whereby the jaw is caused to move bythe rotation of the sleeve, substantially as described.
