Description

PATENTED JAN. 10, 1905.
S. P. DOANE. TYPE WRITER RIBBUN HOLDER.
UNITED STATES Patented January 10, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
SHARON PRATT DOANE, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF. ONE-FOURTH TO O. G. HOPKINS, OF SACRAMENTO. CALIFORNIA.
TYPE-WRITEFF-RIBBON HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent N 0. 779,915, dated January 10, 1905.
` Application filed February 13, 1904. Serial No. 193,397.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHARON PRATT DOANE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Type-Writing-Ribbon Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. is an improved construction of type-writer-ribbon holder, the object being to provide a holder which will protect the ribbon against moisture and atmospheric changes generally; and another object of the invention is to provide a holder from which the ribbon can be quickly and easily unrolled and attached to the machine Without soiling the fingers of the operator; and a still further object is to provide a holder by means of which the ribbon can be quickly and easily removed from the machine and Wound within the holder in case it is desired to preserve the ribbon for future use.
With these objects in view my invention consists, essentially, in the employment of a cylindrical case closed at each end and having a longitudinal slot at one side, said slot being normally closed by means ofa slide working across the said slot and held in place by means of a keeper, a roller arranged within the case, said roller being mounted upon a shaft passing through the ends and provided with a crank-handle, said roller having a piece of fabric connected thereto and to which the type-writer ribbon is attached, said fabric and ribbon being wound upon the roller within the case.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this speciication, Figure l is a perspective view of a case constructed in .accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the end of the ribbon projecting from the case or holder. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is asectional perspective view showing the ribbon completely unwound from the case. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In 'carrying out my invention Ivemploy a cylindrical case A, having closed ends B, and passing through said closed ends is a shaft C,
carrying a roller D within the casing, saidv roller being rigidly connected to the shaft, so that the rotation of the shaft will serve to rotate the roller also. It will of course be understood that one of the ends B is attached to the cylindrical case after the roller or spool D has been arranged therein. The shaft C is provided with a crankhandle C at one end for the purpose of rotating the roller or spool. 'Ihis roller or spool D has a piece of fabric E connected thereto, and the cylindrical case is provided with a longitudinal slot F, through which the piece of -fabric is adapted to pass. The ribbon R is attached to the end of the piece of fabric E in any suitable manner, and by turning the crank-han dle the fabric and ribbon can be rolled or wound upon the roller or spool D.
For the purpose of making the case practically air tight and protecting the ribbon against atmospheric change I employ a slide G, which is curved to lconform to the cylindrical case and which is adapted to be moved across the slot Fffor the purpose of closing the same, said slide being constructed with a rib or flange G atene end, by means of which the said slide can be quickly and easily ma nipulated. The slide is held in place by means of a keeper H, which is arranged parallel with the cylindrical case, and the slide moves between this keeper andthe case and is provided with a lip G2, which prevents it being drawn from beneath the keeper.
When the ribbon is sold, it is contained within the holder, and when it is desired to put the ribbon upon` the machine the slide is moved back so as to open the slot, and the end of the ribbon is then lifted out by means of a pin and attached to one of the spools of the machine, and the ribbon can then be unreeled from the holder and attached to the machine without soiling the hands of the operator, and in case it is desired to remove the ribbon from the machine and preserve it for future use one end of the ribbon is connected to the fabric, and then by turning the Crank-handle the ribbon can be reeled upon the roller or spool, and after being completely vvound the slide is closed, protecting the ribbon the same as before it was first used.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and eicient construction of ribbon -holder capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-
1. A ribbon-holder comprising a cylindrical ease, closed at the ends, and having a longitudinal slot at one side, a slide for closing said slot, and a keeper for holding the slide in place, a roller arranged in the case, a shaft passing through the ends of the case, and upon which the roller is mounted, one end of said shaft being provided With a crank-handle.
2. A ribbon-holder comprisinga cylindrical ease, closed at the ends, and having an opening at one side, a slide adapted to close said opening, said slide having a liange at oneend and a lip at the other end, and a keeper arranged adjacent the said opening, said keeper being adapted to hold the slide in place, a roller arranged in the case, a shaft passing through the ends of the case, and upon which the roller is mounted, one end of the shaft having a crank-handle connected thereto, as
set forth.
