MEMORANDUM-BOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 776,157, dated November 29, 1904. Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No. I79,245. (N0 model.)

To all whom it may cancer/2 Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. 'TALLAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Memoranduni-Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to memorandumbooks; and it consists, substantially, in the improvements hereinafter particularly described.

l/Vith many forms of memorandum-books as hitherto devised considerable inconvenience has been experienced in the handling of the same-as, for instance, when comparing or checking o'fl' expense accounts and other memoranda-due to the fact that the leaves of the book are usually permanently bound together in such manner as to render it necessary to turn them one at a time for the purpose desired, and inasmuch as it is frequently necessary to refer back to a page for some data or item it is apparent that much time is lost in the use of a book of this construction, it being practically impossible, moreover, to bring together for checking or comparison different accounts or memoranda contained on leaves or pages of the book widely separated from each other. Still further, the leaves of memorandum-books of the kind referred to are usually permanently inclosed in stiff covers,

adding considerably to the weight of the book, and inasmuch as it is frequently necessary for business men and others to transmit large numbers of books through the mails the expense of postage is greatly increased.

One of the principal objects of the present invention is to overcome the above-mentioned objections and inconveniences and to provide a memorandum-book which is simple in form as well as easily and quickly handled, besides possessing other advantages, all. as will more fully hereinafter appear when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a face view of my improved book as opened, showing the extensible memorandum-sheet as folded against one side of the cover. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the zigzag or book as when closed. Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 1, showing the memorandum-sheet as partially unfolded or extended and representing the device by which such sheet is retained within the cover therefor.

Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the form of my invention herein shown I employ a zigzag memoranduni-sheet capable of being folded upon itself any desired number of times, thus presenting foldable leaves which have suitable ruled lines and proper data for memoranda on their opposite sides, and I also employ a cover for such sheet provided on the inner face of one side thereof with a device of special embodiment by which the sheet may be retained within the cover as desired, said device permitting ready removal of the sheet either for the purpose of comparison with others or for transmission through the mails.

l/Vhile I have herein represented my llll provements in a certain preferred embodiment, it will be apparent, of course, that I am not limited to the precise details thereof in practice, since immaterial changes therein may be resorted to coming within the scope of my invention.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings by the reference characters thereon, 1 represents an extensible memorandum-sheet of any suitable dimensions and which is zigzag by being creased, as indicated at 2, by which to present any desired number of foldable leaves or sections 3, upon the opposite face of which may be printed suitable ruled lines 4 (see Fig. 3) or data 5 (see Fig. 1) for memoranda of any kind. The character of the printed or other matter contained on the different faces of the leaves or sections is immaterial and may be altered at will, and therefore but brief reference is made thereto, the gist of my invention residing in the remaining features forming the subject of this speciiication. As shown in Fig. 1, the leaves or sections of the sheet may be folded one upon another practically 1n book form, whlle in Fig. 3 is shown the manner in which saidleaves or sections may be unfolded or extended for the purpose of comparing or checking off data or memoranda.

I employ a back or cover for the sheet, as indicated at 6, the same being preferably of stiff material and of proper dimensions to inclose the extensible sheet when the sections thereof are closed or folded together, as indicated in Fig. 2, and in order that the said sheet may be detachably or removably held within the back or cover I employ what I term a retaining device 7, consisting of a strip of paper, leather, or other suitable material attached at its ends to the upper and lower edges, respectively, of one member of said back or cover. (See Figs. 1 and As thus embodied, it will be seen that the free uppermost leaf or section of the extensible sheet 1 may be inserted beneath said retaining device, thereby holding the entire sheet between the two members of the back or cover, yet permitting extensibility of the sheet by unfolding any desired number of the remaining sections thereof. (See Fig. In this Way when the sheet-sections are folded up and the members of the back or cover 7 closed thereupon the book may be carried about and handled without danger of loss or crumpling of the sheet; but it will be seen that the said sheet may be readily removed from the back or cover for the purpose of transmission of the same through the mails or, for instance, when it may be desired to make con1- parison of the data or memoranda thereon with the data or memoranda contained on other similar sheets or for filing the same.

It is thought the advantages of my improvement will be fully apparent, though it may be added that in virtue of the specific form and organization of retaining device herein shown the free leaf or extension of the zigzag sheet may be inserted thereunder for its full width without requiring any alteration of said leaf to enable this to be done. It will also be noted that between the attached ends thereof the retaining device is free at both of its edges, thereby enabling the said uppermost section of the extensible sheet to be drawn beneath and partly beyond the device to bring the first fold or crease of said sheet substantially before or over the usual flexible connection between the cover members. In this way the sheet is always readily and compactly held within the cover.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A memorandum-book comprising a sheet folded into connected leaves for memoranda, and covers hinged together, one of said covers being provided with a strip of suitable material having a free edge adjacent to the line of hinging and secured at its opposite ends to the edges of the cover at right angles to the line of hinging, the body portion of said strip being disconnected from the cover between its fastening ends thereby forming a pocket, one of said leaves being detachably inserted therein, substantially as specified.
