To wHoM I T MAY eoNcERig; A y Beit known'tbat I, WILLAM M. D ory, of New York, in the county of NewYork, aud Stateof New York,
have inventedcertain new a'nd useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and I Ihereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and e'xa'ct descriptonof the same, reference being had to` the a'ceompanying drawing', which repre sents a perspective view of aclothes-pn'rnade inaoceijdance with my invention.
My invention consists of 4a clothes-pin-coinposed of 'a hook 'end fstock'or handle combined, the said parts' being placed at right angles, or 'transversely to each other, and'iorced together by means of a spiral or other spring-device, as to confine end hold firmly the rope, or other article placed' between them. The,hook and handle have,l of course, a player movement4 towards or away from one another, and` are held together by the` spring whichex'erts the yieldingpressure needed inl order to confine the article vinserted between them, and at the same time to -allow them to 'beseparated when itis desired to remove the article. y l
.In thedrawing; represents the handlevor stock of the pin, and Bthe hook, placed `at right angles thereto, itsy square shank .a passing through a hole or opening, of 'corresponding' size, in the stock, ,'nwhich it iits loosely, soas 'to allow the hoo'k to have the necessaryxransverse play'` towards or Aaway from the handle. Upon that portion \of the yshank a which extends-through the stoclcfand projects from its other side,- is wound-a spiral springpb, one -end of which'bears against the stock, the other being confined by-pins, 'or studs, 1:,'on the end4 of the shank.
By the action of this spring, the hook B and stock are pressed together, s o-as to tightly holdany article,"
the rope, C, fr instance', placed between them,'as will -be understood without fdrth'er explanation.x
' `Instead of the spiral' spring, vulcanized rubber,or .other elastic and yieldiagfdevices may btre'mplo'yed;l
The arrangement of the hook and stock may-also be varied without departing .from the principle of.my invention;'as, for instance, the -hook aan be made of wood, wire, or other substance, so forked as to embraceor be supported in grooves formed on the exterior of the stock, lor the arrangement 'maybe otherwise modied, all that is needed beingthat the .two parts should have the requisite transverse play towards or away from each other. l i i I do not claim broadly the use,as a clothes-pin, bf a clamp'aetuated bye. springg-'nor the mode of forming one of the clamping-devices on. a spindle passing at righ-t angles through the other; but having now described my invention,'and the manner'in which the samejis or may be-carried into eii`eet.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A clothes-pin, composed of a stock, hook, and spring, combined, as herein specified, the hook having' a playat right angles, or transverse t'o the stock, in the mahner d'eseribed. 2. The arrangement. of the hook and stock,s o that the former shall pass through the body of the stock `r besupported upon the exterior of-'the same, as and fdr; the pnrpose herein` set forth1 l In testimony whereof, I have signed' my nalneto this specification before two subscribing witnesses. l .W. M. DOTY.
