Be it known that l, AGNES M. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Embroidery Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in embroidery devices, and more particularly to a combined guide and holder movably connected to the hoops holding the material, and adapted to hold and guide the padding for the embroidery, the object of the invention being to provide a device such as above described which will hold the padding out of the way of the thread to permit a free manipulation of the needle in forming the embroidery.

Heretofore in embroidery work it has been customary to hold the padding by pressing the'thumb of one hand thereagainst and as such padding is made up of a number of threads, it frequentlyhappens that some of the threads become loose and are a source of annoyance as well as delay in the malring of the embroidery.

1t is the purpose of my invention to provide aholding device which is capable of use in connection with any ordinary hoop, and which is movable on the hoop so as to guide and properly position the padding, leaving the hands free for the embroidery work.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying Figure 1 is a plan view improvements.

Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modification.

1n Figs. 1 and 2, ll illustrate my invention in connection with a metal hoop 1, having an outer clamping hoop 3 securing the material l between the hoops. On the material e, 5 represents the pattern, 6 the padding made Vup of a plurality of threads, and 7 the finished embroidery formed by the thread 8 and the needle 9.

The parts above described are well known in the art., and form no part of my present invention except to illustrate one form of apparatus in connection with which my `invention may be used.

10 represents my improved device which operates both as a holding device and as a guide for the padding 6. The device 10 is preferably made of spring metal bent at its upper end forming' a tongue 11 to over lap the material 11, and press it against the upper edge of the hoop 1.

rlhe opposite end of the device 10 is bent forming an upwardly projecting tongue 12 which presses the material i against the inner face of hoop 1, while the intermediate portion of the device is bowed outwardly forming a gripping surface 13 which bears against the outer hoop 3.

The padding 6 is disposed between the intermediate portion of the device, and the material 1 on the outer face of hoop 1, and l believe a preferable location is to position the padding above the outer hoop 3 as shown in Fig. 2, where it will be held with sufficient friction to prevent its accidental movement, yet allow a free manipulation for all ordinary purposes.

The device 10 can be slipped over the hoop and the material, after the material is clamped between the hoops and can be moved around the hoops to position the same as may be desired.

1n the modification shown in Fig. 4, ll illustrate my invention in connection with a pair of ordinary wooden hoops 1/1. 1n this modification, l provide the device with upper and lower tongues 11 and 12 like the preferred form, but have the intermediate portion of the device approximately straight to rest against the outer wooden hoop 111 and o'set a portion of said device as shown at 15 to receive the padding 6.

1t will therefore be noted that my improved device is adapted for use in connection with various forms of hoop and holding means for the material, and various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, hence l do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, liberty to make such but consider myself at 5 ters Patent is:
