IVILLARI) B. OULVER, OF CARBONDALE. PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,522, dated November 22, 1904. Application filed June 13, 1904. Serial No. 212,410. 4 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD B. OULVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will 'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in Windows, its object being to enable the window-sashes to be readily removed and to also enable them to be pivotally hung at their upper sides, so that they may be swung inwardly, and hence washed without the necessity of getting outside the window; and my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention also contemplates the provision of pivotal supporting devices for the sashes, which may be used also for locking the sashes at any desired adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a window embodying my improvements, showing the sashes closed in full lines and pivotally hung and turned inwardly for washing in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the .plane indicated by the line a. a of Fig. 1. Fig.
3 is a similar view taken on the plane indicated by the line b b of Fig. 1: Fig. 4-. is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 0 0 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of one of the sashes, showing the sash-cord also.
The window-frame shown at 1 is of the usual construction. It may be of any suitable construction. The outer stop 2 is fixed, as is usual. The parting-strip 3 comprises an upper fixed section 4, an intermediate-removable section 5, and a lower removable section 6, which is connected to the section 5 by a hinge 7. The latter enables the lower section 6 to be swung inwardly from the intermediate section. The meeting ends of the fixed section 4 and intermediate section 5 are beveled, as at 8, so that the fixed upper section 1 overhangs the upper end of the intermediate section 5 to secure the latter, as will be readily understood. The fixed section 1 and the intermediate section 5 of the parting-strip is provided at suitable distances apart with adjusting and pivot openings 9.
The inner stop 10 comprises a fixed upper section 11 and a removable lower section 12, jointed thereto, as at 13. A suitable fastening device (indicated at 14) is provided near the lower end of the removable section 12 of the inner stop to secure the latter to the frame and permit its removal therefrom when desired. The fixed upper section 11 of the inner stop is provided at suitable distances apart with an appropriate number of adjusting and pivot openings 15.
The'upper sash 16 has its top rail provided on its inner side with pivot-bolts 17 to engage the openings 9 on the parting-strip, so as to fasten the upper sash at any desired adjustment, and the said bolts when the removable sections of the parting-strip and inner stop have been removed enable the upper sash to be pivotally connected or hung at its top, so that the upper sash may be swung inwardly to enable the outer side of the glass therein to be washed without the necessity of getting outside of the window. i
The lower sash 18 has its top rail provided with similar fastening and pivot bolts 19 to coact with the openings 15 of the fixed sections of the inner stops to enable the lower sash also to be locked at any desired adjustment and to be swung inwardly, so that the glass therein may be washed on its outer side without the necessity of getting outside of the window. Bothof the sashes may be also swung inwardly at the same time, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, for purposes of ventilation.
I provide a chain 20, which may be connected to the top of the window-frame, and the respective sashes are provided with hooks 31 to be engaged with appropriate links of the chain to support the sashes in any desired position or inclination.
To enable the sashes to be turned to an inclined position by means of their pivot-bolts and without binding upon the sash-cords 22,
the inner sides 23 of the cord-slots in the sashes are rounded or beveled at their upper ends, as at 24.
To effectually exclude rain and wind, I provide the upper and lower sashes in their respective top and bottom rails with grooves 25, in which I secure packing-tubes 26, of rubber or other suitable material. To pack the joint between the lower rail of the upper sash and the top rail of the lower sash, I provide the top rail of the lower sash in its outer side with a groove 27, in which I secure a similar packing-tube 28 to engage the bottom rail of the upper sash when the sashes are closed.
When the removable sections of the parting-stripsare in place, as when the window is in ordinary use, said sections are locked to the frame by any suitable means. I show locking-bolts 29 for this purpose, which bolts engage openings or keepers in the jamb of the frame.
From the foregoing description, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A window-frame having the parting-strips and inner stops provided with fixed and removable sections, said sections having openings in their opposing inner sides, and sashes provided on their inner sides with bolts to engage said openings, lock said sashes when the removable sections of the parting-strips and inner-stops are in place and pivotally support the sashes when said sections are removed, to permit the sashes to be swung inwardly, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
