DAVID Atomen, or New Yonntu. Y., AssIeNoR To PHELAN e GOLLENDER,
' 'or NEW YORK CITY.
Letters Patent No. 77,436, dated May 5, 1868'.
YMPROYEMBNY In cornemuses.
`TO ALL WHOM MAY CONCERN 2 Y A y v Be it known that I, DAVIDALDRIQH, of New York, of`New -York county, in the State of New York, 'have inventeda certain new arid useful Improved Cue-Cutteu und I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, 4reference beingphad tothe accompanying drawings, melringpart of this appli-V.
My invention rel-etes to a new machine or nstrum'er'it'for cutting the ends ot' billiard-cues preparatory to putting the .tips or leathers on them. I y
Previous to my invention, the 'machine or instrument in most general use in billiard-rooms for trimming the ends of cues has been composed of e tubular holder, provided with. a. cutt/er, secured on the end of a spring shank, and solarrenged that by'pressing upon the` said shank,`(after having inserted the cue in the holden) and turning the cue, the cutter` would remove e. piece from thev cue-end, and leave the` latter in a proper condition to receive lthe leather ortip in the manner well linown'to those skilled in the art.' But it has been found in practice that this kind of eue-trimmer, Ieven when operated with by'an expert, doesnot work successfully' and satisfactorily, end thzit it very Soon' becomes so deranged and inoperative as-to be, almost wholly useless, and other devices or instrumentshave been devised, though none o'f them, to my knowledge, are fully successful. To overcome the practical objectionsexisting in `cue-cutters as heretofore made,'and`to afford an instrument at once eiective, simple, economic, and durable, and with which an'experiencd hand can perfectly trim the end of a cue ready to receive the leather, isthe object of'my invention, which consists'in a cueftrimnier'composed of a. hollow hand-piece and cueholder provided with a. reciprocatory carriage atitsfupper end, carrying the cutter,`nnd also in forcing along the said carriage and cutter by means of a lever or-hundle hungto the hollow hand-piece and eue-holder, lall aswill be presently fully. described.
And my invention also' further consists in making the cutter removable, and retaining' it in the carriage or slide by Ineens of the carriage-holder, all eswill be presently more fullyv explained. v i Y To' enable those Askilled in the art to make-and use my invention., I will proceed to describe the construe tion and operation of Aone of my improved cue-trimming machines or instruments, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a. top view, I
Figure 2 longitudinal section,
Figure 3 a side view, and
Figure 4 det'ail views of the carriage and cutter.`
In the several figures, the same part is designated by the same letter of-referencei A is a metallic hand-piece, which is made hollow, as illustrated, und which is formed at its upper end with a table, b, in which is arranged Aand vworks a cutter-carriage, C. lThis carriage is moved back and forth in suitable bearings, with c. reciprocetory motion, by means ofthe upper end ot' a vibrotory handle, D, moving in a mortise cnt through said carriage, as clearly showin at iigs. 1 and 2. I
The handle l) is pivoted'at e to the hand-piece and cue-holder A, endris provided with a. strong spring,f, to throw it always, when relieved, iii-'such a position as to platee thecerriage ready for the introduction of the cue or stick. g is thecutter, which may be made of steel, and about in the vshape shown, and this cutter, g, is inserted into the carriage b, and is retained in place by the tips 1,2, of the bed or table on which said car. ringe rides.
`At g. 2 I hnve shown lthecue -or stick atm, and illustrated theA machine as it'l iu the operation of cutting the cueend. i A
l The operation of my improved cue-cutter will be readily comprehended by those familiar with the use of auch tools. The cue being inserted within the hollowhand-piece A, as'illustratednt fig. 2, and adjusted to the cutter g, so that the latter will bite at the point where it is'desircd to cut oh the cue, the seid cutter is forced into the stick by pressing the handle or lever D toward the cue-holder A, while at the same time the cue m is turned round 'and round (in the usual manner) by the operator.l And in vthis manner the end of the cue is trimmed or cut off in a perfect plane, and smoothly. It will be observed that the cutter g, being held laterally by the carriage C, and retained vertically within the table in which said carriage moves, will have a perfect reciprocatory motion, land will consequently cut the cue infa perfectplane, and smooth and evenly. The `cutter g is so shaped and adapted 4to the carriage/C, that when the latter is unshipped, the said cutter can be takenI right out for sharpening, lite. i
By having lthe carriage mortised through, and the end of the lever D passed through said hole, as shown and described, a very simple means of operating the said carriage is provided, and one which, very economically manufactured, is durable, and not liableto get out oforder. Of course, the particular vmanner off holding th instrument -to work :it is notmaterial, but I would suggest to have the instrument grasped in the right lancl, with the lever D toward the palm, and the cue turned with the-left hand.
.It will be seen that while an instrument, such as shown and described, may be very cheaply manufactured, it will be exceedingly durable, and will'work successfully in every particular.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my claim of invention.to any preclsedetails of construction or proportion `ot` parts; but, havingfully described my improved machine or instrument forcutting'or trimming cues,
WhatI claim therein las new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA i 1. The hollow handpiece and eue-holder, with its table or slide-holder, b, in combination with a reciprocating carriage, provided with a cutter, substantially as and for the purposesset forth. 2. I claim the employment, 4in combination with the hollow cue-holder and lhandpiece, of'a reciprocatory cutter-carriage and the driving-lever D, the whole arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose subsv stantally as described. Y y
l 3. I claim the removable cutter g, in combination with the cutter-carriage and table b, substantially as and for the purpose described. i i l In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this twenty-ninth day of February, 1868.
