FARE-REGISTERROD-OPERATING HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,901, dated September 27, 1904.

Be it known that I, ALBERT H. HALL, of Quincy, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fare-Register-Rod-Operating Handles, of which the followingdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to certain improvements in means for securing a handle to the operating-rod of fare-registers in street-cars.
The object of my invention is to produce a simplified and improved means for connecting a handle to a rod, so that the handle may be readily applied and so securely fastened to the rod that it will be practically impossible to move it with relation thereto, the parts which comprise the handle and its securing means to be few in number and of such a form that they may be made by casting or dropforging and need not be machined before they are assembled.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a handle made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the connecting-clip. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the key. Fig. 5 is a section on the line a! a of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a modification.
As shown in the drawings, the handle a is provided with a square or cubical shaped head a, formed integral therewith, and a semicylindrical recess or seat (62 is formed in the end of said head of approximately the same diameter as that of the rod 5, to which the handle is connected. A clip 0 is provided with a semicircular recess 0 of the same diameter as the rod b and midway between its two arms 0 The arms 0 are adapted to fit easily over the head a, and lugs c at the ends of said arms extend toward each other and engage the shoulders formed by the head a at the point where it is connected to the handle when the inner side of the head of the clip bears against the end of the head of the handle. The head a is provided with a transversely-extending aperture which leads into the bottom of the recess (02, and the arms 0 are provided with apertures which register with that of the head from the body thereof and arranged to enter the recess a when the bolt is in position to connect the clip and handle. A nut ciS threaded on the opposite end of the bolt from its head and is adapted to hold it in position.
In connecting the handle to a rod already in position in a car the clip 0 is placed upon the rod so that the rod will be located in the semicircular recess 0, then the head a is placed against the rod, with the latter in its semicircular recess (6 and then either the handle or clip is moved transversely, so that the head (4 passes between the arms of the clip, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. The bolt (Z, which is pref erably of hardened metal, is then passed through the apertures of the clip and head, with the side bearing the tooth (Z next the rod Z), and upon the nut a being tightened the hardened tooth of the bolt will be forced into the softer metal of the rod or become embedded therein, and the arms of the clamp will be locked against the sides of the head of the handle, and the two will be firmly connected together. IV hen the parts are thus connected, the handle cannot be rotated with relation to the rod in either direction or moved longitudinally thereof without cutting a groove in the metal of the rod, so that however the handle may be pulled it will be practically impossible to move it with relation to the rod.
In Fig. 5 I show a modification which may be employed in connection with a square rod. In this construction square seats are provided in the clip f and head g for the square rod 7) in lieu of the semicircular seats before described, the clip and handle otherwise being the same as before. As on account of the square form of the rod there is no necessity of providing means to prevent the handle from turning with respect to the rod, the tooth on the bolt may be omitted. It is,
however, necessary to have the connectingbolt 7t tapered or otherwise formed, so that it Wlll bear against the side of the rod 6 and hold the handle from movement longitudinally of the rod when the parts are clamped together.
While particularly important advantages are secured by the combination of my improved form of clamping and locking bolt with the form of two-part handle described, yet said bolt could also be advantageously employed in connection with a solid handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination With a rod, a handle having a head at one end, said head being recessed in its end to receive said rod, a clip on the opposite side of said rod having arms inclosing said head, said head having a transversely-eX- tending aperture leading into said recess, and said arms having apertures registering with the ends of the aperture of said head, and a bolt or key for connecting said clip and head, and having a portion arranged to be forced into locking engagement With said rod, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a rod, a handle having a head at one end, said head being recessed in its end to receive said rod, a clip on the opposite side of said rod having arms inclosing said head, said head having a transversely-extending aperture leading into said recess, and
said arms having apertures registering with the ends of the aperture of said head, and a bolt or key for connecting said clip and head and having a tooth arranged to enter said recess, and means for forcing said tooth into the rod as said parts are clamped together, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a rod, a handle through which said rod passes,said handle having a transversely=eXtending aperture therethrough, and leading to said rod, a bolt having an integral tooth at one side thereof of relatively harder metal than said rod, said bolt being located in said aperture, and means for forcing said tooth into the rod, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a rod, a two-part handle encircling said rod, a bolt for clamping said parts together, a tooth formed on said bolt and means for forcing said tooth into said rod as the parts of the handle are clamped together, substantially as described.
