RADIATOR FOOT-REST.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed November 30, 1917. Serial N o. 204,690.
T 0 all whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY A. THEXTON, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiator Foot- Rests, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to improve the foot rest shown and described in my pending application Serial No. 103,922, filed June 16, 1916, provision being made for more conveniently mounting the rail on its supports and adjusting the rail lengthwise thereon.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a radiator with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partially in section, of the same,
Fig.A 3 is a detail view, showing the parts of the device separated,
Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the manner of mounting the rail on its supporting Shanks.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the plate which is seated against the outer face of the radiator.
In the drawing, 2 represents a radiator having the usual cast metal sections 3. 4 represents bolts, polygonal preferably in cross section, having heads 5 at their inner ends and supporting channel bars 6 through openings in which said shanks are inserted, the flanges of said bars being seated on the Vinner faces of the sections 3. The corners of the outer portions of the bolts are threaded, as at 7 with attened surfaces between them, and a plate- 8, preferably of sheet metal, has an opening therein to receive the threaded portion of said shank on which Said plate is slidable, flanges 9 being formed thereon to rest on the outer faces of the sections 3 when the parts are assembled. 10 is a shank having a passage 11 therein and a threaded portion 12 at the outer end of said passage for engaging the threads of the shank portion 7 so that when the shank is tightened on the bolt the plate 8 will be pressed firmly against the walls of the radiator section for locking the device securely thereon. The opening in the plate 8 see Fig. 5, is square or polygonal to tit the shank of the bolt and in placing the device on a radiator this plate is used as a hand grip to hold the bolt from turning when the shank 10 is screwed on to the bolt and tightened. I have found this manner of making the plate quite important, as there is no other means provided to keep the bolt from turning when the shank is tightened thereon.
- rFhe outer end of the shank 10 has a hollow attened head 13 thereon that is adapted to slip into a longitudinal opening 14 provided in the rail 15 which is preferably of sheet metal, and may be finished in any suitable manner. The opening 14 is comparatively narrow and the head 13 is turned to slip into this opening and when inserted within the rail a quarter turn of the shank will cause the head to engage the inner surface of the rail with sufficient friction to hold the rail securely in place on the shank. The plate 8 being of sheet metal, will always yield sutliciently to adjust the head 13 properly to lock the rail thereon. The bar 6 has suflicient freedom of movement on the bolt 4 to adapt itself to any inequalities in the surface of the section and as the ianges of the bar have only a narrow bearing on the sections, the bar can be seated and the bolts adjusted to extend straight out between the sections of the radiator, so that the other parts canbe easily attached without binding or cramping.
1 prefer to provide a finish for the ends of the rail consisting of metal balls 16 suitably mounted thereon and concealing the open ends of the rail. As shown in Fig. 3, the passage 11 in the shank extends through the head thereon so that a wide range of adj ustment of the device is permissible, the bolt being screwed into the shank until its end contacts with the wall of the head ifpsuch adjustment is necessary.
The device may be made in various sizes, the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A radiator foot rest comprising supports having means for securing them to the radiator sections, said supports comprising shanks having heads thereon, a member having an opening therein through which said heads are inserted, said shanks being mounted for partial rotation after the insertion of their heads Within said member for engaging said heads with the Walls or said member and locking it thereon.
2. A radiator foot rest comprising supports having means for securing them to the radiator sections and provided with shanks mounted for revolving movement and having flattened heads at their outer ends, a tubular member having a longitudinal slot to receive said heads, the rotation of said shanks when said :heads are inserted Within said tubular member causing said lieads to engage the Walls of said member for locking it thereon. 3. A radiator foot rest con'iprising a support having means for securing 'it to a radiator section and including a bolt haviiip` a threaded outer end, a shank having a threaded socket to receive the end o saidA bolt and provided With a head having flattened surfaces, said shank'having a passage therethrough to allow said bolt to enter said head,V and a tubular member of spring material having arloiigitiidinal slot therein to receive said head and wherein said shank is moved a quarter turn to engage said head With the Walls of said tube.
4. A radiator 'oot rest comprising supports having means for securing them tothe' Y Y radiator sections, said supports comprising members having heads thereon, a tubular member havinga longitudinal slot through which said heads are inserted, said members being mounted for a parti-al rotation after the insertion of said heads Within said tu- HENRY A.
