DESK ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,168, dated August 23, 1904.

Application filed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180,885. (No model) To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. BRIDGES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moultrie, in the county of Colquitt and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an attachment for desks, tables, or the like; and it consists in a frame or carriage mounted to reciprocate upon the desk-top and adapted to support a number of books .or other articles.

The device is particularly'adapted for use by a bookkeeper in posting his accounts, since the several books he must use maybe placed upon the reciprocating frame or carriage, and by simply shifting the latter longitudinally upon the desk-top any one of the books may be brought before him, thereby permitting him to remain seated while performing this work.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use, well adapted for the purpose intended, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangment of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a desk, illustrating the application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the attachment or device removed. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the front of the device. Fig. 4: is an edge view of one endof thesame. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device in its folded position.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1

denotes a desk of the form usually used by bookkeepers, and 2 my improved supporting device or attachment. Said device, which is in the form of a carriage or frame, comprises two half-sections 3 and 4, which are hinged together along one of their ends by hinges 5 and which are supported upon the desk-top by rollers 6, so as to be readily moved longitudinally. Said half-sections or frames of thesupporting-carriage may be of any material,

shape, and construction, but are preferably of rectangular form. as shown. One of said rollers 6 is journaled in a bearing 7 at each of a the outer corners of the' half-sections 8 and 4 upon their under sides, and one is also provided at the center of the inner end of the half-section 3. Said rollers support the frame the strip or rib upon the front edge of the desk, as shown.

By formlng the device in two sections and providmg the h1nges'5 said sectlons may be ,folded together, as seen in Fig. 5, to permit the device to be readily transported or packed away when not in use. Handles 10 maybe secured to the center of the outer ends of each section, so that they will register with each other when the device is folded to permit it to be readily carried.

The use and advantages of the device will be readily seen. The books or other objects are placed upon the top of the carriage just as if it were the top of the desk, and the bookkeeperor other person using the desk may bring any portion of the carriage before him while seated on his stool or chair. He is thus permitted to post accounts from one book to another while seated and without the necessity of leaning or bending his body tovarious awkward and uncomfortable positions.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven-' tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be by the supporting devices under it, said sections being hinged together and having handles at their outer sides to register with each other when the sections are folded.
