PATENT OE IcE.
WILLIAM A. LEFLER, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,901, dated August 16, 1904. Application filed November 13, 1903. Serial No. 181,056. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, W1LLIAM A. LEFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint,
in the county of Genesee, State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that class known as slidingjaw wrenches, and has for its object to provide a device of this nature which will be simple of construction and cheap of manufacture and in which the jaws may be quickly and easily adjusted.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals'of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective View of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the sliding member of the wrench, the cooperating parts being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a view of the forward edge of the device.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises the usual stock or handle 5, having ratchet-teeth upon its forward edge and having a transverse head 7 formed upon one of its ends, one side of which forms a clamping-jaw 8. Slidably disposed upon the stock 5 is a member 9, which carries a second jaw 9. The member 9 has the usual passage 10, with which the stock 5 is engaged, and connecting this passage 10 with the forward edge of the member 9 is a downwardly-directed diagonal slot 11. Disposed within the slot 11 is a triangular block 12, which is provided with teeth 13 upon its longest edge and lies with these teeth in engagement with the teeth 6 of the stock. To hold the block 12 in engagement with the stock, a spring 14 is provided and has one of its ends disposed in a recess 15 in the lower side of the slot 11, the remaining end of the spring bearing against the lower face 12 of the block, the ends 15 and 16 of the block projecting beyond the sides of the slot 11 and are rounded and provided with concavities in their outer faces to receive the fingers of the operator.
In adjusting the wrench the member 9 may be moved freely in the direction of the head 7; but movement in the opposite direction will be prevented by the teeth 13 engaging the teeth 6. When it is desired to move the jaw in this direction, the ends 15 and 16 of the block 12 are grasped by the operator with the thumb and second finger, respectively, and the block is moved against the action of the spring 1 1 to disengage it from the ratchet 6, when the member 9 may be moved in either direction, as desired.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. A wrench comprising a jaw having a passage therethrough and an upwardly-directed diagonal slot connecting one of its edges with the passage, said member also having a jaw projecting laterally from one of its ends, a stock having ratchet-teeth upon one of its edges slidably disposed within the passage and having a laterally-projecting jaw upon one of its ends for cooperation with the first-named jaw, a toothed block slidably disposed within the slot and lying with its teeth normally in engagement with those of the stock, a spring disposed within the slot and bearing against the block to hold the latter yieldably in its normal position, the ends of the block extending outwardly of the slot and adapted for engagement by the fingers of the operator to move the block against the action of the spring.
2. A wrench comprising a member having a passage therethrough and an upwardly-directed slot connecting one of its edges with the passage and communicating with the sides of the member, said member having a jaw proof the operator to move it against the holding means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM A. LEFLER.
