PIPE-WRENCH.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11, 1912.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Serial No. 682,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN E. Vnn Been, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Vrenches, of which the following is a specithe wrench to the object to which thewrench is applied but also for a compact construction whereby the wrench may be used in places that are inaccessible to wrenches of the ordinary type.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench that embodies features of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a view in section taken on or about line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
As herein shown in preferred form a fixed jaw 1 has a tang 2 to which the wrench handle proper is applied. A guide block 3 is pivotally secured to one side of the head 1 as by a pivot pin 4 passing through a lug 5 on the head that is inserted in a recess of the block. A tongue 6 from the block bears against a stud 7 that is projected against the tongue yieldingly from a suitable guide opening by a spring 8 or the like. A movable jaw 9 adapted to cooperate with the jaw 1 has a shank 10 that is reciprocable through a guide opening in the block 3 in substantially parallel relation to the tang 2. A yoke 11 that is longitudinally adjustable on the tang 2 by means of a thumb screw 12 engaging rack teeth 13 on the tang has a guide opening through which the shank 10 extends. The guide opening is proportioned to allow limited lateral movement of the shank 10 that is interlocked to move with the yoke longitudinally of the tang by means of a stud or pin 14 playing in a lateral slot 15 of the yoke. A thumb piece 16 is formed on the shank conveniently near the thumb screw 12. As the tang and shaft may both be rectangular in section and the guide block may consist substantially of a strap folded around the shank the wrench jaws may be applied to an object in a very narrow space. The jaws may be conveniently released from the object by pressure on the thumb piece on the shank and the parts are so proportioned as to combine strength with lightness.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A pipe wrench comprising a fixed jaw,
a tang extending therefrom, a guide block tiltable on the tang, a spring normally projecting the guide block, a yoke longitudinally reciprocable on the tang, a thumb screw rotatable on the yoke in engagement with rack teeth on the tang, a movable jaw and a shank therefor longitudinally movable through and tiltable with the guide block, the outer end portion of the shank playing in the yoke and moving therewith longitudinally of the tang.
2. A pipe wrench comprising a fixed jaw,- a tang therefor, rack teeth on the tang, a guide block pivoted to the tang to tilt longitudinally thereof, a yoke longitudinally reciprocable in the tang, a thumb screw r0- tatable in the yoke in engagement with the rack teeth, a movable jaw, a shank therefor longitudinally movable through the guide block, a finger piece on the shank extending through an opening of the yoke, and a stud on the shank playing in a lateral opening of the yoke.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN E. VER BECK.
