Description

No. 767,836. PATENTED AUG. 16, 1904,

APPLICATION FILED MAR. 11, 1904. no MODEL.

UNITED STATES Patented August 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. RICE, OF WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GEORGE L. VOSE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
LOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,836, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed March 11, 1904.
' ends commonly sought in devices of such a character, but also an improved engaging means for the two locket members and a body whose structure shall not involve the use of solder nor present the insuperable problems involved in the assemblage of the parts constituting the body when the dimensions of the parts are so minute, as frequently occurs. To the above ends my invention essentially consists in the construction and combination ofparts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank from which the wall of my new locket-body is formed; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the locket in open position, and Fig. 3 a vertical central section of the same in closed position. Like reference-letters indicate like parts throughout the views.
A locket embodying my invention comprises a body A, connected to a cover Bby a hinge c. The body comprises a base a, supporting a wall 6. This wall is formed from a blank metallic strip, such as that shown in Fig. 1, provided with a longitudinal channel 6 near its top, which is angular in cross-section. The
resulting structure presents a shoulder f, from which rises an integral flange or annular extension 9, one of whose sides is coincident with the wall 6 and the other side outwardly inclined. The base of the extension, there- Serial No. 197,637. (No model.)
fore, is thinner than its upper portion. The described blank is now bent and its extremities united by solder, the shoulder being upon the outside and when soldered to the base a completes the body portion. A suspensionring it is fixed to the locket-body.
The cover B comprises a top 2' and an upright rim 7', the thickness of the latter being less than that of the wall 6. In closed position the edge of the rim rests upon the flat annular shoulder f of the wall I), and the outer rim-surface coincides with the outer surface of the latter. The overhanging or upper portion of the flange g engages the inner surface of the rim when the locket-cover is closed and retains the parts thus engaged by virtue of the spring nature of the flange g resulting from its novel formation.
My new structure by its integral structure overcomes disadvantages heretofore existing in prior forms of construction, and its peculiar formation dispenses with all independent catches or engaging means formerly required .to retain the cover 1n closed position.
My locket may be circular, polygonal, or rectangular in outline.
Having described my invention, what I claim is In a locket a receptacle portion comprising a base and an annular wall formed of a strip bent into circular form with its abutting ends secured together, said strip having a thicker portion and a thin portion forming a springflange with its outer face inclined inwardly.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER H. RICE.
