BANDBOX-STAY FOR HATS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE C. HARIusoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of F airfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bandbox-Stays for Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to bandbox stay flanges for hats, and consists of certain constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this application.

In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application Figure 1 is a plan view of a pasteboard blank as it appears before turning down the corners; Fig. 2 a sectional elevation on the line 0;, a, of Fig. 3, showing my improvement assembled within a bandbox with the hat stay in proper position, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the bandbox with the cover removed, showing my improved stay flange in proper position therein and with the hat stay within the flange.

Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.

Heretofore stay flanges have been made oval in contour so as to fit the sides of the bandboX, or have been made rectangular so that they touch the interior of the bandbox at four points while the edges along the sides of the rectangular flange have been turned down so as to afford a support for the flange against the bottom of the bandbox. The oval flanges are cut out with a rounding machine which leaves a rough edge, and the general shaking up of the bandbox during transportation causes a friction between the periphery of the flange and the inside of the box which grinds fine powder-like particles from the contour of the flange which particles adhere to the hats and give rise to considerable annoyance.

In the instance of the rectangular shaped flange there are only four points of contact with the bandbox and the flange will readily turn Within the bandboX between certain limits, thereby shifting the whole nest of hats and cause chafing; moreover, the turned down edges along the rectangular sides do not afford a firm and even contact with the bottom of'the bandbox and the flange will therefore tip and w abble ithin the bandbox, and this w ill also tend to shift the nest of hats and cause the latter to chafe.

My improvement, although simple in its nature, obviates these disadvantages, and will be best understood from the following deseription:--I first take a rectangular piece of pasteboard of proper dimensions, such as shown at 1 in I ig. 1, and cut from the center thereof an oval opening 2 to contain the bottom hat stay, the corners of the blank are then turned down on the dotted lines shown at Fig. 1 so as to form feet 3 (four in number). A bandbox stay flange 4. is thus formed octagonal in shape, which will lit within the bandbox 5 and have eight points of contact against the inner sides of said box, and which will be supported by the four feet 3 upon the bottom of the box. These four contact feet, presenting as they do mere points, will rest iirm upon the bottom of the box no matter whether the surface of the latter be level or not, and, moreover, these feet are formed from the blank without the slightest waste of stock. The bottom hat stay 6 is assembled within the opening 2 and rests upon the bottom of the bandbox and affords a proper support for a hat or a nest of hats.

A hat stay flange made in accordance with my improvement will always preserve its proper relative position with respect to the hat stay, and there can be no turning of the stay flange within the bandbox owing to the eight points of contact, which points of contact are on opposite sides of the longest and shortest diameters of the box.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In combination with a bandbox of ovaloid form, a hat stay flange made from a rectangular section of pasteboard centrally apertured, each of the four corners of said pasteboard being turned downwardly along lines diagonally related to the two sides forming a corner, said turned down corners forming four feet each triangular in form, the base or each triangle being located at the juncture with said stay flange and being so located In testimony whereof I affix my signature with respect to the box interior as to contact in presence of two Witnesses.
