SMOKING APPLIANCE;
A Application sied January 2e, 192e. semi No. 83,806.
' Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view takenl on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and,
Fig.y 3 is a perspective view of my improved attachment apart from a pipe.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention I have shown it `as applied to a smoking pipe although the invention is also applicable to other smoking appliances as for instance cigar and cigarette holders. In the illustrated form, a pipe 10 of usual conf struction comprises the usual bowl 11, stem V12, mouth piece'13 having the usual smoke passage 14 ext-ending longitudinally from the bowl through the stem and mouth piece. According to my invention a passage 15 is drilled or otherwise formed between the bowland the outer end of the `mouth piece, herein in the stem extending transversely from the smoke passage 14 to the outside of the stem, preferably toward the lower side thereof, and in position to be covered by a casing or sleeve-like member 16, formed of any suitable material, as for instance metal, wood, imitation ivory, or hard rubber tapered or otherwise shaped to tightly tit around or engage the stem of the pipe.
In use, the casing or member 17 is fitted over the stem 12 of the pipe or other smoking appliance with the trap 17 covering the open end of the passage 15. In using the pipe, smoke is drawn in the regular manner directly from the bowl 11 to the mouth of the user. Cool atmospheric air is simultaneously drawn into the passage way 14.-
througl'i the opening 18 and passage way 15, thereby cooling the stem of the pipe and keeping the mouth of the user cool and pleasant. Liquid accumulations, such as saliva or nicotine which may be deposited in the passage 14, are collected in the trap 17, thereby keeping the bowl 11 and passage 14 dry and free from excessive moisture.
Advantages of my invention are the comfortable and hygienic mann-er in which the smoker may use the appliance, as well as the ease and rapidity with which the casing 16 may be removed from the stem for cleaning. Obviously my invention isnot restricted to the details of construction shown and described, but is susceptible to various changes in shape and size to accommodate latmosphere to said trap through the upper side wall thereof to ventilate it and permit the escape of gases therefrom.
2. A smoking appliance comprising a stem having a longitudinal smoke passage and a transverse opening communicating therewith, a sleeve like me1nberformed with a trap in alignment with and covering saidl opening and also formed with means constituting an air duct for admitting outside air to said passage through the upper part ofthe trap wall to ventilate the trap above the contents and movable to throw the duct and trap out of operative connection with the transverse opening.
3. A smoking appliance comprising the combination with a stem having a longitudinal smoke passage and a transverseopening communicating therewith, of a member titted to said stem and formed with a depression constituting a trap and also formed with a longitudinal groove on one end LQdjacent to and communicating With said trap for admittingoutside ail-to said passage.
4. A smoking appliance including a bowl and stem communicating with a mouthpiece, a transverse opening into said stem, and a sleeve covering said opening, said sleeve being formed with a trap beneath said opening, and having an air ductfrom the atmosphere to said trap.
In testimony whereof, I have Signed my name to this specification.
WALDO C. DODGE.
