SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,925, dated A g 9, 1904.
Application filed November 16,1903. Serial No. 181,368. (No model.)
To all whom it may crmcern:
Be it known that I, LnvI N. BAGI-IAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to folding furniture, and has for its object the provision of an iinproved form of folding davenport or sofa-bed wherein deep springs may be employed to cushion the seat and back when used as adavenport and to constitute a flexible mattress when used as a bed.
My invention in its preferred embodiment is an improvement upon the structure set forth in a copending application wherein two pivotally-united sections that constitute the seat and back of the sofa are caused to be bodily moved transversely of the frame supporting the same, the frame desirably having grooves at its ends that engage rollers located at the hinged parts of the seat and back.
In order that the frame portions of the seat and back may be bodily moved in the grooveways or guiding means provided upon the supporting-frame of the entire structure and at the same time carry the deep springs, I provide each of said frame portions with an arm, the said arms being preferably articulated or linked together approximately at the level of the spring-111attress, there being preferably provided a roller where the arms articulate, which roller engages a grooveway in the main supporting-frame. There are desirably provided two sets of arms, one at each end of the structure, so that the bed may be properly guided in its transverse movement.
Interlocking mechanism is provided upon each end of the structure, being distributed between both arms, so as to control their relative positions of the sections to which they are attached.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view, partially in full lines and partially in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a part of the structure in the direction of arrow 9, Fig. I. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts in a slightly-different position. Fig. i is a crosssectional view on line i 4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 3, showing the seat and back frames placed in the same horizontal plane when the device is adjusted to form a bed.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different views.
The frame a of the sofa-bed is desirably mounted upon casters and is equipped with transversely-arranged guiding means, preferably in the form of a channel-iron 7), constituting the guideways for moving the sections of the sofa-bed. The back or rear section 0 and the front section (1 of the sofa-bed are linked or pivotally united at a, rollers f being desirably mounted upon the pivot-shaft, such rollers being adapted to ride within the ways afforded by the channel-irons 1/). In order that the frame sections (Z and 0 may accommodate box-springs or springs of other type sufliciently above the same so as to afford free spring edges, the said frame portions are provided with arms cl 6' at each end, that project above the bed-sections and are inclined with respect to said frame-sections. The arms cl a intersect at c, where the roller 7" is provided.
It will be apparent that the structure so far described is one that will enable the angularlyrelated sections to be swung, and in order that the swinging sections may also be bodily shifted as they are swung from one position of adjustment to anotherI employ mechanism which will constrain such bodily movement of the angularly-related sections," this constraint being preferably effected by means of links g, interposed between the supportingframe and one of the sections of the sofa-bed, desirably the back section (.1. The links g and the back 0 are so relatively disposed that when the structure constitutes a sofa the back is substantially is a Vertical line with the rear of the support, as indicated in Fig. 1, the seatsection extending completely from the rear to the front and overhanging at the front a slight distance.
I/Vhen the article of furniture constitutes a bed, the pivot is shifted to the front of the supporting-frame, the seat-section then being temporarily in vertical line with the front of the supporting-frame, as indicated in Fig. 3, whereafter the seat-section is lowered in the manner to be described to occupy the position indicated in Fig. 5. In order that the sections of the the sofa-bed may thus be shifted from place to place, I provide mechanism, to be clescribed, for maintaining the same in their angular relation while they are being moved from front to rear and rear to front of the supporting-frame.
In order that elevated or box springs may be provided, mechanism is supplied that forms, with the arms (Z c, interlocking means that maintain angular relation between the bedsections and permits separation thereof. This supplemental mechanism preferably resides in a link it, pivoted upon the link (Z between the ends of links (Z, a pin or engaging element 2' upon and between the ends of link 6', adapted to engage the link it, which preferably has a recess h for the purpose, and a releasing-link Z pivotally attached to the back 0 and adapted when the device is properly manipulated to disengage the link it from the pin a, so that the sections of the bed may be changed from their angular relation (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) to their horizontal position. (Shown in Fig. 5.)
In placing the sections in the same hori- Zontal plane the section (Z is placed in vertical alinement with the front portion of the supporting-frame, after which a slight forward motion is imparted to the section (Z, that will cause the links it to break engagement with the pin 6 of the section 6 by means of the supplementary catching device 2' which is caught by the button or point when the section (Z is moved forward. When a slight reverse motion is imparted to the section (Z, the catch 2' engaging the pin i, will raise the recess it in the link it out of engagement with the pin 6. In order that that section of the sofa-bed which projects beyond the supporting-frame when the sections are spread apart may be supported at its outer longitudinal edge, I provide leg-supporting mechanism, comprising, preferably, two legs Z, which are preferably linked near the forward edge of the section (Z. Link mechanism m is desirably placed between these legs and at the rear or back section 0, forcing the legs to fold close to the section (Z when the parts are placed in right-angular relation and causing the said legs to be thrust forward and downward when the sections are separated and flattened. The links on are preferably pivoted to bracket eX- tension n, provided upon the section 0, to clear the pivotal union between the sections and for securing desired purchase upon the legs.
The operation of my sofa-bed will be readily apparent. When the sofa-bed is to be transformed from the sofa (shown in Fig. 1) to a bed, the front edge of the seat-section is grasped and the parts moved until the rollers occupy the position shown in Fig. 3, at the front of the frame (a, whereafter a slight forward motion of the seat-section toward the back section will effect disconnection between the fastening-links in the manner heretofore described. The seat-section may then be lowered to the position indicated in Fig. 5, the legs Z having by the same operation been thrust forward by the link mechanism 972.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a sofa-bed, the combination with two sections thereof, of a bed-frame supporting the same, supporting-arms carried by said sections, said arms being pivoted together at their ends, guiding means upon said frame serving to direct said sections in transverse travel, said supporting-arms engaging said guiding means where said arms are pivotally united, mechanism for maintaining said sections in angular relation and permitting the same to be horizontally disposed, said mechanism comprising a notched link pivoted on the supporting-arm of one section, a pin located on the supporting-arm of the associated section which said notched link engages, a pawl pivoted upon said link and adapted to cooperate with said pin to disengage said link and pin when said sections are folded into a bed, supporting-leg mechanism for said seatsection, and link mechanism for causing said leg to assume its function as a support when the sections are formed into a bed, and collapsing the same when the sections are formed into a sofa, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 29th day of July, A. I). 1903.
