To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSIAH A. DEWEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sofa Bed, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to folding beds and particularly to that type adapted to be converted into sofas.

An object of-the invention is to provide a sofa structure in which the front part of the housing is supported well above the floor upon suitable legs so that the device has more the appearance of an ordinary sofa and is less suggestive of its real character of a fold ing bed which has come generally to be as sociated with a massive box-like structure. Another object of the invention is the provision of a sofa bed structure in which improved means are embodied for disposing of the seat and back frame in the bed form of the device. Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved folding frame for the upholstered mattress, and means for mountin the same.

Another object o the invention is to provide a sofa bed, which in the sofa formis relatively short from front to back.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following descrlption of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the,

drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.

Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 is a verticallongitudinal sectional view of the sofa bed unfolded into the bed form. The upholstered mattress is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the head of the housing being shown in section. The plane of the view is indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the sofa bed when folded into the sofa form. For purposes of greater clearness, the mattress is omitted. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the device partially opened. The way in which the mattress is enclosed by the sections of the folding frame is clearly shown. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken in a plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail view taken horizontally from the inside, of the u per end of the side of the folded folding rams. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken in a plane indicated by the line 7'7 of Fig. 4.

My sofa bed comprises a housing 2, the front portion'3 of which is supported well above the floor on legs 1. The rear portion of the housing extends to the floor and ac-' commodates the folding bed in the sofa form of the device. A seat frame 6 is pivotally mounted on links 7 and 8 which are pivoted on the housing. Thelengths of the links and the position of the pivots is such that the seat frame may be moved forwardly and downwardlyfrom its normal position shown in Fig. 3 to that of'Fig. 1, where it rests on stop 9 while the folding frame is extended to form a bed. A spring 10 secured to housing and rear of seat frame prevents too abrupt lowering of the frame and assists in the recovery movement. Fixed on the rear of the seat frame on each side is a leg 11 which acts as a support for the extended folding frame.

1,A back-frame 12 for the sofa is hin ed to the rear of the seat frame, and the rst movement in extending or unfolding the bed is to pull the back frame out to lie upon the seat frame. Continued pressure then picks up the seat and moves it forwardly and downwardly, the legs 11 then being in the required position to engage the underside of the foldingframe.

Extending under the rear portion of the seat frame on each side of the housing in a substantially horizontal position, is a slideway formed of fixed spaced rails 14; and just behind the back frame on each side is a substantially vertical slideway formed of fixed spaced rails 16. Slidably and pivotally mounted in these slideways is the folding bed frame comprising head section 17, body section 18, intermediate section 19, and foot section 20. Grooved rollers 21 on the head end of the body section engage in the slidesections are thus horizontally alined, the

pivoted on the body section, one end connected by link 26 to the head section 17 and the other end connected by link 27 to the extension arm 28 on the intermediate section. When the sections are unfolded, the straightening out of the intermediatev section effects also the horizontal alinement of the head section which comes to rest on the stop 29 fixed on the sides of the housing.

When the head, body and intermediate head section resting on,the stop '29, and the body section on the slideways 14 and legs 11, a rigid and stable structure is presented which will not accidentally lose its alinement by the Weight of th occupant of the bed. Upward. movement of the roller 21 in slideway 16 is limited by stops 30.

The folding frame is stifl'ened laterally by the U-bar 31 connected across the intermediate section. The foot section is. provided with supporting legs 32 resiliently held. in either folded or unfolded position by the spring 33. A foot board 34 is fixed on the end of the foot frame, and on the sidesiare rollers 36 adapted to engage the guides 37 when the bed frame is folded up and turned back'into the housing.

It will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 4 that the folding frame sections, almost completely enclose the mattress when the foot frame is turned over upon the body frame, and that the folded bed is then nearly in balance on the roller 22. A sli ht sure suflices to push the folded bed ack into vertical position in the rear of the housing, the weig t being mostly taken on the roller 22 so that little effort is required to control the movement. In order to fix the position of the foot and intermediate frames when folded and unfolded the pivoted connections between the intermediate frame and the foot and body frames are formed with knuckle I claim: Y 1. A sofa bed comprising a housing, a seat frame pivotally mounted in said housing to swing forwardly and downwardly without inverting, a folding bed;frame arranged in said housing to move from a posi tidn behind the raised back frame to a position above the lowered seat frame, and

. means on said seat frame for supporting said bed frame.

A sofa bed comprising a housin substantially horizontal and vertical sli eways on said housing, a folding bed frame slidably and pivotallymounted in saidslideways for movement from a vertical to a horizontal position, a seat frame pivotally mounted in said housing to swing forwardly and downwardly without inverting, and means on said seat frame for supporting the folding bed frame in the horizontal position.

substantially vertical and horizontal slide-- ways arranged in said housing, means for slidably and pivotally mounting said body section at spaced'points thereon in said slideways, and means for correlating the pivotal movements of said head and 1nter- 4 mediate sections on said body section.

5. A sofa bed comprising a housing, a"

folding bed frame comprising a head, body,

intermediate and foot sections pivoted together, substantially vertical and horizontal slideways arranged in said housing, means for. slidably and pivotally mounting saidv body section at spaced points thereon in said slideways, a lever pivoted on said body section, a link connecting the head section to one end of the lever, a link connecting the other end of the lever to the intermediate section, and a stop on said housingfor preventing movement of said head section past its horizontal alinement with said bodysection.

A sofa bed comprising a housing, a folding bed frame comprising head, body, intermediate and foot sections pivoted to gether, a seat frame, a back frame pivoted to the seat frame, substantially vertical and 1 horizontal slideways: arranged in said housing behind seat and back frames and belowthe seat frame respectively, means for permoved forwardly and downwardly, means for pivotally and slidablymounting said body section at-spaced points thereon 1n said slideways, and means for correlating the pivotal movements of said head and intermediate sections on said body section.
